NDS-10 [Sa1amandra]

[Still need a banner]
In this entry, i will NOT be ranking each game from 10-1, i'll be placing the best game up to date of 10 different genres for the NDS. So there will be no ranking, so the bottom game will not be the best of the whole NDS library, it's the best for it's genre. I decided to put the use of spoiler tags to make it more dramatic and more suspenseful.
I will be organizing my review into catergories
Graphic
Double Screen usage
Control
Sound
Uniqueness
Story
Limit Pusher

If a game is in the position where you do not want it, don't be an ass about it, suck it up and don't flame. You can suggest what you think would be better (between 2 games), and NOT flame about it and suggest. If your going to flame, get out!

Role Playing
Ah the genre we all know and love, the genre that would break us down to tears, the genre that takes us A HELL OF A FREAKING LONG TIME TO BEAT!!! it's ROLE PLAYING GAMES (RPG for short). Games which story matters more than gameplay (but gameplay is still awsome). An RPG that can incorporate both very well is a VERY good RPG. And the winner is...
I had a rough time choose between Pokemon DPP, Crono Trigger DS, Final Fantasy IV DS, Final Fantasy III DS, TWEWY, Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, and Dragon Quest IV. Big list huh? Well Pokemon is out of the picture because it has been the same for nearly 10 years, and they are really running out of ideas for new pokemon. I did not choose TWEWY because though it was very good game, with great gameplay AND an amazing story, i decided to go with the classics, because without the classics, there is no modern. Now that i've narrowed it down to FFIV, FFIII, DQIV, DQV, DQM:J, and CTDS. We now go with what matters. First of all i CANNOT judge it by story because that is personal opinion and all the stories are to damn good.
Graphics:
FFIV, FFIII, DQM:J took classic graphics to the future, into the realm of 3D, and did it very VERY well. (+3 each)
DQIV and DQV stuck with the classic looks with colorful enhancements. (+3 each)
CTDS kept the graphics to it's true beauty of the 1990s (even though it's been 10 years from it's release...[9 if you want to get technical]). (+2)
Double Screen Usage
FFIII: Your top screen was black majority of the time, we don't know why. It's only used in menu's to screen both where your character currently is and the menu, and overworld for a map. (-2)
FFIV: The other screen outside of battle is used for a map so you won't get lost, and in battle bottom screen shows ATB, HP and MP to prevent crowding, and the battle menu on the top screen so you can focus on the fight. (+1)
DQIV and DQV: Both screens were used to extent the view of the area. Both have gorgeous backgrounds so it's technically sight seeing. Top screen is used to show battle info while bottom screen shows the battle in first person. (+2)
DQM:J: Like FFIV, the other screen was used as a map in the overworld, and in battle the whole screen became you battle menu, spaced out and properly sized for well use for the stylus if you want to play it that way! (+1)
CTDS: Second screen used as a map and shortcut buttons for the menu. In battle, everything is put on the bottom screen, makes keeping an eye on the battle a bit tedious, thats why the option to change it back to the classic form is there. (+1)
Controls
FFIII: Solid controls, also capable of using the stylus (though not suggested). It keeps the classic feel to it. (+1)
FFIV: Button controls are solid, but Stylus controls in battle were omited and stylus on overworld will suck because the top screen is the main screen. (+1)
DQIV and DQV: Basic solid controls, and DS touchscreen capable all the time, and because of the size of the characters, you won't often cover half the screen and not see where you are going. (+1)
CTDS: Exact same controls as the PS version, except for the shoulder buttons, due to the lack of a L2 and R2, and the controls were good in the past. (+1)
Sound
FFIII, FFIV, CTDS: Made by one man, all the sound was FREAKING AWSOME. I don't think i can even explain it, go to google and listen to any Final Fantasy Music and see what i mean. (+3)
DQIV and DQV: Not only do they have sexy detail in their 3D backgrounds and 2D sprites, the sound was breath taking, the tracks were just amazing. I can't even define it, GOOGLE TIME. (+3)
DQM:J: The sound was actually pretty choppy and pixleated. People might not think so but i was seeking for detail. (-2)
Uniqueness
(for this specifc section, i will not rate the game for it's past entries, but why it is unique on the DS)
FFIII: Well, for americans, this is the first time Final Fantasy 3 made it to our shores, and it is the first Final Fantasy game to be in full 3D, Handheld (+2)
FFIV: With full 3D graphics, Voice work, a fresh scripted, and an enhanced battle system, we can call FFIVDS, a game of it's own (+3)
DQIV: Now with 2 screens to see the enviroment to fix the screen shrinking problem, and enhanced graphics, fixed up scripted, and portability, people would choose this over the original (+2)
DQV: Ok truth be told, the graphics looks exactly the same from the previous remake of DQ on the DS. Couldn't they have spiced of up in any sort of way? they did the exact same things they did on DQIV to DQV. (+1)
CTDS: Nothing was done to this game to make it better than the Playstation version. Excluding the typo's, i'd rather play the game on the big screen, and it's also not very portable because it lacks a QUICKSAVE BUTTON (-1)
Limit Pusher (Yes/No)
FFIII: [Yes], Full 3D graphics, impressive at the time it was released, and many good looking 3D models (+2)
FFIV: [Yes], Great 3D graphics, very impressive, models look great, 3D Cutscenes with angle changes and voice work to put up the dramatic feel (+2)
DQIV and DQV: [Yes], Stunning 3D Backgrounds and 2D Sprites. Very VERY detailed and manages to put all this detail running on 2 screens at once. (+2)
CTDS: [No] Though they managed to put a great PS game onto the DS, they did the same for DQIV with improvements and overhaul 2 NES/SNES games completely to match today's standards for games. (0)
(Highlight)
The Final Winner is... Final Fantasy IV and Dragon Quest IV [4th time is the charm]
Score:
Final Fantasy III: 9
Final Fantasy IV: 13
Dragon Quest IV: 13
Dragon Quest V: 11
Crono Trigger DS: 6

This ends our first section of my review. Comment and Rate. I'll try to do one every day, this takes me quite a while to put together.

This a great list, very well thought out.

I am a bit disappointed that CT wasn't updated as beautifully as Dragon Quest, DQ4's win is well deserved.

Why do people like to hate on TWEWY? It was a great game. I played the J and U versions, and they were both awesome. It seems like it's one of those "I'll hate the popular game to be cool" situations.

[quote name='Moots' post='1886602' date='Apr 8 2009, 06:02 AM']And I thank you for that sir. Twewy is an over rated piece of trash in my opinion.[/quote]

Thanks for repeating that for the 20th time, and provoking TWEWY fans to (rightfully) defend a good game, in a thread which is not about TWEWY at all.

ANYHOO.
That was a very odd way of making a top 10, Sa1amandra. But it's a really neat way of looking at it, nice write-up!
Very nice way of looking at things. I'd just have judged those games as PORT? DO NOT WANT. but this shows their merits nicely.

Maybe something similar to you hating a GTA! :P

I will tell you that I completely dislike TWEWY, I tried so hard to like it, but there are so many things I dislike about the game, I hate the graphics, cartoonish trendy style doesn't fit my vision of an RPG, battle style, I hate having to watch two screens, and the way that battle is puled out is just unattractive and boring to me!
Soundtrack is OK, but again, it doesn't suit the mood I expect from an RPG (it does fit the game tho)..

And I'm not hating it just to be cool, it's my opinion on the game, and really, I understand that some people like it, I just simply can't stand it!

On the other hand..sa1amandra, great thread, and great idea....I like your first post! And I enjoyed reading it..

there's a difference between the J and U versions? (besides language obviously) or u just felt like playing both?

A friend introduced me to the Japanese one, and I got to the end of the first week. I couldn't get any further, so I waited for the NA release.

@Toni: It's completely different. I've tried most of the GTA games and didn't like any of them. It's just not my kind of game. I felt like people were so obsessed with CW just because it carried the GTA name. It's different with TWEWY because it was a completely new game. It didn't follow any other game's legacy.

I am not suprised to see your TWEWY hate comments >_>
