Awful DIY WiiU Gamepad charger

I wanted to play Super Mario Maker, but then the Gamepad started dying on me, so I can't play.

"Why don't you just plug it in?", great question.
Well... I got my WiiU from the UK with UK plug on it, and I only have one UK adapter with me, because I left the other one in Austria.

I heard that the Gamepad is 5V tolerant, so I started scavanging for stuff I can reuse, and voilá, I found a super ancient (probably >14yrs old) USB hub. There is a hole in the case, which is perfect to fit some wires thru' it.

As for the connection between the Gamepad and the USB hub, I used a pair of jumper wires (the ones you use in Arduino prototyping), and shoved them inside the USB hub (it's a really tight friction-fit on the Vcc and GND pins on the back of the USB connector), and the other side I shoved into the charging hole (it's almost a perfect fit).

When I saw the orange light, I was so relieved, because I'm currently waiting to be able to sign the legal papers required to work, and I'm really out of money to be able to get an used Gamepad (why do some people think that the entire console is inside the Gamepad? they can sell for stupidly expensive prices).

So yeah, here it is, in its stupidly hacky glory:

And the best part is is that it still functions as an USB hub, so I can just plug it directly into the WiiU to charge while I'm using the Wii remote :rofl2:

I'll probably make something similar for my old3ds, I can't find my f---ing charger after having turned the entire house upside down...

@Valery0p watch out though, I heard that the 3DS is less tolerant to 5V as opposed to the WiiU Gamepad, so try to keep it below 5V

Thanks for the advice @Sono , maybe I should put some resistors? The fact is that there are a lot of cheap usb->charging port cables, and they probably don't have any extra circuit inside them...
Do you know of any good place for information?

@Valery0p I don't know any place for this information, but I know that 5V is the max, and anything even slightly above could damage your system if the components inside have low tolerances (either generally, or just got a lower-quality batch of power circuit components). The voltage HAS to be below 5V because the main power line (according to MCU readings and stuff) is 5V. Undervolting is safe, overvolting is not.

Edit: yes, make sure put a resistor or something there to make sure the voltage is ever-so-slightly below 5V. If you have a stable low-ripple power supply then you can get away with using that without a resistor, but if it's above 5.08V then you NEED to use a resistor if you want to play safe. Try to drop the voltage to 4.8V (or 4.9V if you're playing a bit risky, this is needed to cope with possible voltage ripples).

Thanks for all the insight :D I’ll probably go the safe route then, but anyways, I found some nice informations that could be useful to someone in the future: if 3dbrew is right, this should be the datasheet of the charging driver; it looks like it was built with USB in mind, and it should be somewhat tolerant…
Also, I’ve found several reports online about how the 3ds charger output itself is 5V or very close to that, so maybe Nintendo mislabeled it? Again, thanks for your help, I’ll make the circuit on the charging cradle, hoping I don’t mess up the polarity lol :P

@Valery0p try quickly yanking to see if it charges or not. The MCU should protect against that if it's short enough by killing the power to anything else.

Ok, I've done a quick test, it seems to work when turned off, but the charging led starts to blink when the console is powered up. That's not a good sign, but maybe it's because of my bad wires. I'm probably going to buy a premade cable sooner or later...

That's cool! Day one on of getting my wii u my cat decided to chew the cord that charges the gamepad. Never got a new one :/
