Real life is coming and it's coming quick...

I still can't believe I'm already about to graduate in a couple months from High School. I keep hearing everyone say that as soon as you graduate everything will be great and life will open up but I just can't help but feel a bit uneasy about it. It just seems to simple to just get a job and live life even if I go through college.

Life is big and wonderful. Try not to worry and just let it happen. I can recall as a youngster thinking about life as an adult and it scared me, but over time I got used to the idea.

I only have 2 years left, and life is already hard for me outside of school. Sometimes it is simple to get a small job, but if you want to work at your dream job, you have to keep doing what you love until you feel confident enough to work.

Yeah i am in a similar situation. I still got a year before i graduate, but it feels like it is going to pass quickly. I am in the process of looking for colleges which can be stressful for me.

Relax, OP. You ain't seen nothin yet. College is the best.

Advice, if you want it: Whatever it is that you "want to be when you grow up," try to get to that point and actually do it for a few years before getting married. If you're still single you can use the income you finally achieved to get some nice toys, do fun shit, and you can use those few years to make sure you didn't fuck up that career choice. If you're married your income goes to family (spouse, baby) first, you last. And you can't as easily quit a job or go back to school if you have kids.

You need to look at what you need to do to get a job you enjoy doing. You could easily get a job in a supermarket, however you'd probably end up hating that.

If you have to go to College and Uni to get to where you want to be then it's probably worth doing. However if you can get an apprenticeship and learn as an apprentice that might be more beneficial as you have real world experience under your belt.

I never wanted to go to College or Uni, however could never find an apprenticeship or any sort of entry level job which was I.T. related so I went to College. After that I had two pretty awful mind-numbing boring jobs and realised I had to do something about it.

Eventually I went to Uni, stuck at it and graduated. It's strange how things work out really as it's never something i'd seen myself doing.

Either way with how things are in the world today don't rush in to anything, I'd probably save some money up and find a friend to go travelling with if I was doing things again. Don't rush in to anything too serious at your age unless your 100% sure what you want to do and know how to achieve it.

I would say that you take your time to think what you want to do, plan what you want to do, rinse and repeat. Don't let things just happen, and don't end up doing whatever that feels good or comfortable in the short term. Those usually are a trap, and end up biting you back on the long term.

Think, Plan, Do. Well, that's my 2 cents.

I do plan to go to college(Ivy Tech & then Purdue) and then get a job in computer programming. But the matter is that I have no idea what sorta purpose I have outside of just living the sake of living. Wake up, go to work, go home, sleep, repeat is all I see ahead after I get out of school.

You're making me thing of that nice song from Radiohead.

But well, that is more of a reason I would tell you to think a lot. I think this is a common and important problem for most people (if not, we wouldn't have songs talking about it). I myself am far from having found a good solution for me. So yeah, I hope you do better.

@sarkwalvein why bother scare a Rookie? he will eventually figure out how real world works at a right price and i tell you no one has made it out scratch-less... and you have a such good job too which allows you to stay on gbatemp whole time :) what's your job?

TBH... something like Software Developer/Programmer that is working in a company that has no new projects since many months ago, meaning I have very little to do really, and I should be more concerned looking for a new job to further my career instead of stagnating here. (and actually, lately I'm concerned how long can a company keep going like this)
