The Process of building a professional board game blog #1

So for my first game design project I have to come up and design a original board game, I figured I would blog about it so it would be more fun and I can get some input. I am currently tying to think of a idea I've personally never really liked board games so this is kind of hard for me. I have a art class 6-9pm today so maybe i can draw some things up there. I have two months to do it but to be honest those two months are going to fly by quickly and I need to get a paper design in by Thursday. Let's see how this goes!

From where I sit board games are more of a maths class type affair than an art one, certainly a board game can benefit from good art but there is a reason https://boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgamemechanic exists.

Anyway idea... how about a game which teaches other people, possibly kids, aspects of a board game. Think how candyland by many accounts is not a game (there are no choices and you can figure out the winner by flipping the cards after shuffling) but at the same time teaches dealing, reading and such to kids.
If this is for a class (I assume that is why there is a time limit) then you a) dodge not having teachers which are nerds and b) having teachers which are nerds and will ask you about the pareto frontier for your game and such like.

Fast, a board game teaching how to play a board game sounds like a good idea. I mean I'll have to work out a idea but I might have something in mind. I'll get back to you later tonight!

Okay, you should also think like what type of "gameplay"
So like Monopoly; they have to go in an order, or like Clue, they have to work towards an objective, maybe like Labyrinth; you have to get relics, while trying to mess up your opponent by moving the board pieces.

Either Way im interested to see where this goes :)

I'm going to have a 3d printed model by tomorrow afternoon. I'll make a second blog post then. I'm tempted to go to a work shop and make it out of wood if people like it. Make it look all classy.

Hah, just last night I was researching creating a board game. I have a pretty fun idea for one based off an existing board game.

Okay, so I have a idea in a GDD however I wanna add some gambling elements too it so there is a risk reward factor so the player feels super exited playing I am probably going with a casino style board hey @FAST6191 if u wanna can i dm u I have no idea how to make the gambling fair I guess, let a lone the value of a poker chip and you seem to be smart at just about anything hahaha

I guess you can.

Though for the most part you are not going to go far wrong with everybody gets the same rules if doing things from a limited pot in order then reverse the order for the second pick (with 4 players that means player four gets picks 4 and 5, player one gets 1 and 8 and 8 should be the worst option available), or try to find a way to do it randomly*.
There are plenty of games which have different rules for different players, many of which are really fun, but they are harder to do.
Equally while I am not a fan of designing this way playtesting can help a lot with this.

*fairness and random can be an odd one. I recall playing I think it was the XBLA version of Settlers of Catan and it has the option to draw your numbers from a bag which should more accurately reflect the infinite rolls pattern of of two dice as opposed to the dice which are just random (give or take two dice probabilities).

The value of a poker chip tends to be written on its face. You can make whatever ones you like as well.

I hope it will be something great like Ports of Essen or Textile Merchant. Or maybe something similar to Tales of The Float Land (board, cards and timer).
