A story about not doing things with muscle memory only...

So today I got another New 3DS XL to play with/resell. It's pretty much brand new in box, and came with two games. I check the firmware, and it's 11.1. I go through the new steps and remember to put server_config.xml onto the card.

The cfw'ed system I had is a Galaxy style one, and uses a 64 gb card (so I can make sure that all the files go onto the card itself as well as having enough room to do nand backups). I do the system transfer, it goes by easily and I manage to get Fieldrunners onto the new 3DS XL. So far so good. By rote, I ended up putting the 2.1 ctrnand files onto the card, and the files for the 9.2 downgrade. I get into sysdowngrader and do the first downgrade.

The stupid part comes next - I did the 2.1 CTRNAND transfer. An eternity later, I come back to an "unbootable" 3DS. Now I start to panic, and then I figured I didn't delete the home menu's ext data. I do that, and the system boots. Now, I go set up the Internet settings, and go toss the old version of SafeA9LHInstaller onto it. I install A9LH onto the system with no sweat. I configure Luma, and then I give myself a heart attack...Luma says it fails to mount CTRNAND.

I figured I bricked my system and start kicking myself. And then I check the SD card and remember that the 2.1 CTRNAND transfer makes you make a 9.2 backup. I use Hourglass9 to reflash the nand, after chickening out a few times (I didn't know if it was this system's nand, but I always used the OTPless version). Bam! My 3DS was working again, and I just about killed a couple of brain cells trying to figure out user error.

So, never ever do things by memory. Check your work against the Plailect Guide! If I hadn't made a backup on 9.2, the system would be useless as hell...

Well i mean according to many the guide is like the scared bible record keeping of all time for a9lh, and you shall never leave home without it. :P

But seriously, sorry it happens, Not everyone is perfect so i mean is just how things happened. Just hope people don't forget these things, everyone uses references no matter how much they feel confident. Is just the safe thing to do. :)

If you didn't have a 9.2 backup, you could have done a 9.2 CTRNAND transfer, since you had A9LH already installed. Simply by putting the Decrypt9 bin pàyload in the Luma payloads folder.

The 9.2 CTRNAND dumps are in the troubleshooting of "9.2 CTRNAND Transfer" in Plailect's guide.

It doesn't matter if you do a NAND backup now. Only if you're downgrading from <=10.7 and wanted to keep your data (if >=11.0, you must format the stock system, so the backup doesn't really matter there).
