The reason why I believe the homebrew scene is dead and not coming back

After being out of the forum for quite a while for personal reasons, things have really changed around here.

Like expected, new exploits would appear, and this time, it was a massive one. But here's the catch: kernel access. Oh boy, that's why smea was trying to avoid it. Everybody went crazy, after downgrade utilities were released. But why downgrade? Will it make your system better? Will you have access to the Nintendo Network service? Nah, it's for one simple reason that everybody refuses to talk around here: piracy.

No, "backups" won't make you more legit, since it's still illegal to have a backup of a non-destructive media format and with copy protection (CDs, cartridges, etc), by some worldwide laws (check here). Also, you're just a little liar saying that you want to have copies of the games you "own". To say the truth, nobody really cares about homebrew. It's all about having free games and emulators at any time, anywhere, and people saw homebrew as a kind of a temporary solution for this.

Proof? Look at this forum. Less than one third of the topics from the first page are related to homebrew (excluding emulators, ugh), and most other topics aren't even supposed to be here. That's why I (and of what I saw, many other developers) gave up entirely on the scene for the system, and moved on into something better. And for me, it's really not coming back, since everybody will be satisfied with their free games and not caring anymore for new, unique and different projects.

Just my rant about the current situation. Please don't delete my topic or hunt me with pitchforks.

I actually like this more for the possibility of custom content. If we could create something like Project-M for Smash 4, I would be ecstatic, and I love tinkering with stuff. Also, the ability to change themes and customize my home menu to my liking is awesome!

All things considered, I don't give a crap about piracy in terms of exploits. If I want to pirate games, that's what Sky3DS+ is for. I want homebrew, and the quality of the applications developed is pretty impressive once they come to fruition most of the time. The ability to use something like BigBlueMenu to put homebrew on my home screen is a nicety I would love to have (I am waiting for my hardmod to come in the mail to do a backup before downgrading).

Do I pirate and use emulators? Yes. But that isn't why I want to exploit the 3DS.

You are just analy perturbed.
Piracy always enhances any scene and with kernel access you can get all the kickass Homebrew you want, if you don't like the shape the scene just don't come.

hindering what homebrew can do in the name of anti-piracy is a really shitty thing to do because then you start breaking things that homebrew could be using.

if people want to pirate, they will go to great lengths to do that.

"To say the truth, nobody really cares about homebrew"
and even less people care about your opinion

do you think people are going to change their mindset because of this truly wonderful, constructive post?

@foreveryang - top right of page, unfollow blog post. :)

"Also, you're just a little liar saying that you want to have copies of the games you 'own'."

PREACH! @lolzvid

@foreveryang Just unwatch it like I did ;) then just pop in to see the new 'comments' at your own pace

Oh I forgot to say, but if people are liars saying that they want copies of games that they already have, then having HB and saying that you won't use emulators (you know, pirating old games) is on the same level
Just take your double standards elsewhere.

I can't wait for the days where all hardware is locked with a UEFI 2048-bit 'authentic license' bootkey that only lets me use proprietary software. *Shoot, I double posted, don't hurt me, I swear I've only had a bit to drink ;o*

Almost no one gives a shit about homebrew to begin with. Exploiting hardware is almost exclusively for piracy. Aside from emulators and piracy, homebrew consisted of almost nothing of value.
Dead indeed, and nobody noticed.

@lolzvid

I'm gonna have to agree with @Filo97 on this one. Even though I myself have also downgraded my system, really there's no more pirating that I'm doing as when I just had hax exclusively. I still play roms on emulators and the like on the system, but as far as kernel to me is I just wanted to have the best of both worlds.

Unfortunately userland can only do so much and you're otherwised forced to update if you want to get the latest game on your eShop or you want to play a game that requires an update and is not currently compatible with the options you have at your disposal. Kernel, while it is a means of pirating games it's also a means of giving the homebrew scene a lot more resources to work with, and downgrading allows that option to become more practical for the public.

So far I can only recall maybe one or two homebrew apps out there that take advantage of the kernel and that is largely in part because of how limited access to the kernel was up until this point. So yes, while piracy will probably become more rampant as a result of this it won't exactly hurt homebrewing and as far as the 3DS goes at worst it'll dip off near the end of it's lifespan seeing as it's been going okay so far, and Nintendo did a fine job of keeping it that way up until this point to ensure the 3DS had a stable early life.

Personally I used the kernel for better emulation (Which doesn't increase the piracy I'm already doing) and regaining eShop access while retaining the homebrew. I just didn't want to sacrifice homebrew in case something good came along like your Undertale techdemo, and I hope developers like yourself will continue working on bigger and better things because I'll be supporting people like you. You keep the homebrew bloodline flowing.

For me, kernel is used for: piracy, romhacks, some homebrew(not much anymore though), and VC injection(piracy)

I'm not proud of it but, I pirate shit games.
As for AAA games, well.. seeing how shitty they have become (Assassins creed, COD etc) and coming out with a new game every year...

I love having retail games, but they must be great titles the least.

As for me own honest opinion.
I like having total control over me systems.
PS3 I use for games and media.
Heck, last few months I did nothing but watch series and films via Showtime/Movian.

360, such a shame that barely any good homebrew came from it.

Wii, Riivolution!
3DS, I barely got into it
PSP, Screenshot tool, plugins etc
Old Xbox, Quake, Doom, alpha/beta builds of retail games, fully customizable dashboard.

There's loads more that I should mention tho.

I do agree on the fact that todays "scene" primarily exists of a few actual homebrew enthusiasts and devs whilst the vast majority (looking at the Nintendo scene) consists of pirates.
