Firstly I wanted to link to a song for anyone that reads this to listen to, that way they have a nice song. Though I realized I would be linking to other sound object things with this post so instead of embedding it I'm just going to link it for who ever wants to go through the trouble of listening to what I think is a nice song from an over looked game.

Second my grammar is horrible. ._.
Basically this came to my head (while watching yu yu hakusho, it may come up often in this) as what if the things we were watching were still on VHS tapes. Which eventually led to the amount of space needed for each tape, and the amount of time to collect them, if the animation stuck with using Cell animation, and rips of course of shows. (Think of Auxing your stuff on youtube
Now if you dunno what a VHS tape is or its size, basically stack two normal DVD cases on each other and you have the size of a VHS tape, the tapes usually held 3-4 eps with previews on them so imagine collecting a massive show like Detective conan or Yu yu Hakusho (If not an anime buff think of it like collecting all the episodes of Heroes or Dead like me) and storing that much. Tapes also don't have a dual audio feature and I figure if we were still using them today we would have two separate tapes one for english audio, one for japanese subs to please the crazed fanbase of a show, so if you wanted everything nice and complete you would basically double your load.
On to collection DVDs are usually mass produced and finding a series in particular isn't that hard, hell simply google and you'll get what you want. VHS wasn't like that, it was get it while it was still being produced or forget it companies moved the hell forward and the only things that really ever got copied after moving forward were big American block busters and even some of them fell to it. I remember always trying to find certain ghibli movies on VHS to no avail back when VHS was the big deal was a pain in the ass...
So if you want a TL;DR version VHS were big, they didn't hold much (average DVDs hold 6 episodes I think?), there would probably be various languages of shows, tracking them down was a pain back when they were still in "style".
Now on to the animation part, cell animation was a way by hand shows we're animated they had tons more feel put into them as well as style, this however is arguable and pretty much my opinion on the matter. The current animation still holds up nicely but for me it seems less detailed or worked for. An example for this would be yu yu hakusho when he is given the mass ball of spirit energy from his teacher, the result is a brutal contrast with light and effects that the rest of that show up to that point which was kinda a light heart feel. The contrast from this is something I haven't really seen in anime using the current animation, though still it could just be me if so please show me a scene that does just as grand a job as yu yu hakusho! =D
Examples from trailers or openings of shows :s gonna try to use sonic to show contrast..
Two oldies first

To note it says movie but it was two OVAs that were the pilot episodes for what was going to be japan's sonic series. They just happen to stand well on their own.

Now the two new ones

As for ripping the stuff... not to sure how well it would actually look =D quality differences would probably be obvious xD but if we were still using VHS and that animation would it eventually improve into the quality we have from DVDs and blurays? Its probably impossible but still an interesting thing to think about...
sorry for my grammar, I may not have explained some things as well as I would have liked so sorry for any confusion also brought about, and sorry if this isn't the place for this.
