All this Portal 2 viral marketing has gotten to me

I was actually planning on buying it when it goes on sale (and it WILL go on sale in no time since it's Valve) but damn. All this ARG, Potato stuff really makes me want to get it.

So that brings me to my question: 3DS game or Portal 2? And which version of Portal 2? PS3 or PC? PS3 ver comes with a PC copy and I might just trade it in after I activate my PC copy.

I got one potato on my profile so far :) I would have gotten most of it if it weren't for exams...

Definitely Portal 2, if the PS3 version comes with a PC version, go for it.

Portal 2 is much better then any 3DS game out right now.

Buy Portal 2 now.
Wait until June.
Buy Cave Story 3D/OoT 3D/StarFox3D
???
Profit!

The PC version is and has been on sale for 10% off http://store.steampowered.com/app/620/

Well if the PS3 copy comes with the PC version, then PS3.
Then sell the PS3 version because PC version = best version.

But if you do that you'd probably be getting Portal 2 for like $20.

Makes me wonder how long Portal 2 really is. If the PS3 version comes with the PC, GO FOR IT! :D

lets see

Portal 2 or what ever crappy 3ds launch game

obvious choice is obvious

also dont count on returning your ps3 copies after stealing the steam activation from it because we have no idea how its done yet or if game stores will get a statement from valve to not let anyone return an opened ps3 copy for that very reason, ect...

It's done by linking your PS3 Steamworks account with your PC account.

GZ: The PS3 version includes Steamworks functionality which, on the face of it, gives it the edge over the version 360.

JB: Uh huh, I think so.

GZ: And it also provides PS3 players with a copy of the PC version for free. How does that process work? Is there a Steam key included in the box to download the PC version, or is a copy gifted to you once you link your Steam account in the PS3 game?

JB: We're going to send out some more details on that, but when you buy the PS3 version there'll be a key code in the box , and when you first bring up Steamworks in the PS3 game, that allows you to link your Steam account with your PSN account. That's where you punch in the code, and once you've used that code it's spent. With that link, you automatically own the game for PC and you can download it on any PC or Mac that you have. If you don't have a Steam account you can instantly create one through a quick sign up, and then you can activate that later as a full Steam account on your PC.

GZ: Do you need the code to access co-op in the PS3 version, or can you simply play through PSN without touching Steam?

JB: You have to create a Steam account, which again can be via that quick create where all you're doing is clicking a button saying 'hey, I wanna play'. You don't need to input the code. You don't even need to have a full Steam account.

GZ: So someone buying a second hand copy of the PS3 version would still have access to the co-op even if the code has already been redeemed?

JB: Yes, they would.

GZ: Does that leave the system open to abuse? Let's say I want to pick up the PC version. Are there any measures stopping me from buying the PS3 version, linking the code to my Steam account, immediately selling back the PS3 game to a store and effectively getting a PC copy for next to nothing?

JB: No, I don't think there's anything that would prevent that. We're willing to take the risk that someone might jump through all those hoops to create what we think is a really compelling feature that people are going to like.

Remember you're paying more for the PS3 version. The PC version is currently 44.95 but the PS3 versions are 54.95. So it depends on whether you think having the PC version available to you is worth the extra $10. I have both but will probably get the PC version. I have no desire to play Portal2 on my PS3 to be honest.

Ironically if you're waiting for a sale and want the PC version, you're probably better off waiting for the PS3 version to go on sale. That will probably get discounted heavilly once the game goes too far after its release date. I doubt it will be discounted too much on Steam until the Christmas sale. Buy the PS3 version, then just activate the PC steam version. Course it assumes you have a PS3 to do this :P

I was planning to wait until after the release and if possible wait for a sale that discounted the price even more.

I caved and bought it yesterday. :ninja:

I'm caving in today and buying it >__>

I'm torn... I already pre-ordered on Gamestop because I have tons of giftcards.... It seems unlikely they'd release early since that woudl really piss places like Gamestop and BestBuy off. Bahh I want this :P

I suppose though if the ARG as to drive consumers to preorder or whatever it's working :P

This thread says nothing about releasing early... I think you're looking for this topic.

Anyway, I pre-purchased mine about 1 month ago via Steam for PC and I agree, all this ARG stuff is very good marketing...
