11.3 and NTR

Yo. It's me again. Let's talk about the two things everyone seems to talk about and what I exactly think of them. Yep. time to talk about some Homebrew stuff. So, what are the latest developments?

  • 11.3 got released. Downgrades got patched, safehax gone, menuhax permanently gone and RXTools is dead.
TBH, I always sorta expected this one to arrive. It was weird that despite the fact that hacked 3DS's were a thing, Nintendo just refused to patch it. It won't affect me personally (arm9'ed almost a year ago on both my systems), but it will cause an inevitable flood of shitposts in the usual channels.

Menuhax being gone is sorta unfortunate, since it is arguably one of the oldest types of hax, and is the one that was linked on smea's hbl page.

RXTools dead... I mean, c'mon guys. You're using the CFW that hasn't been worked on since, like what? 2013? If shit eventually breaks, you don't really have much ground to complain on. We all knew it was going to break some day, don't act suprised that it did indeed, as a matter of fact, break. RXTools was a good CFW, but the Luma3DS+Decrypt9 combo is way better nowadays. It's screens just don't look as nice.
  • NTR back in development.
First things first, compliments to cell9 for not giving up on working on NTR CFW. I totally get why he left the scene for a while and had canceled NTR for the time being. Sometimes a timeout is just what someone needs.

Unfortunately, a timeout is just useful for letting shitstorms blow over. The shitstorm that NTR CFW started (preaching about FOSS) never ended. They just moved on to shitting on emuNAND users. Now that he's back on NTR CFW, I constantly see people badgering him about it. All I have to say to that is this: You already made him quit the scene once because of your shit. Why are you thinking that this will change anything?

I mean, I support FOSS, but I don't go and harass people for not using it. NTR CFW is his work, and it's his choice to work on it. If you don't like it, code up an alternative yourself (like what happened with pico and nano 1). Don't shit on someone for not open sourcing their code. Their work, their choice.

Even though a lot of the work in the homebrew scene is reliant on being open source, there is never such a thing as being obligated to open source it. The main reason why the homebrew scene is open source is because devs sometimes just lose interest. If that happens, at least someone else can pick it up.

NTR CFW doesn't really fall into that category due to it's rather unique status when it comes to CFWs (primarily allowing for cheats, romfs redirection and video recording rather than patching out sig checks. It also layers itself over other CFWs, instead of running at boot).

So please, just cut it out. Also, stop with the constant arm9loaderhax preaching. Arm9loaderhax is great, and for newbies I recommend doing it, solely because it's the best method there is. But some users just know how their system works and just dislike having to learn the ins and outs of arm9loaderhax. And as much as the process has eased up over the past two years, it still takes quite a while to switch from emuNAND to arm9loaderhax. Not everyone has that time.

~~
And that is all I have to say on the recent developments. Not sure if I will keep this up, but eh... who knows. Even though I'm not very opinionated when it comes to this kind of stuff in threads, I do hold an opinion. One that I think is worth sharing.

- Have an excellent day,

Footnotes:
1: Basically, nano was created as a free alternative to the proprietary pico text editor. Eventually the GNU foundation took it over. On most systems, the command 'pico' is synonymous with nano.
