Just why? I don't understand the name... I know that the two i's in 'Wii' are supposed to represent two people playing together, but what does 'U' mean?

U could mean anything, but I believe the marketing gimmick is that its the Wii, created specifically for "U."

Reggie Fils-Aime explained this at the beginning of the first announcement, on the E3 last year. I can't recall it word by word, but it was something like this:

"the wi ...... stands for we ...... as in "us". But we...that is, the people, don't want just a console for "us"...we want to include one...that includes you...as well. Hence...WiiU. And that...is what we...at nintendo...are all about. To create...and enhance...and innovate...and blah...blah...blah..."

And so on. It took me about thirty minutes where "WIIU" was displayed in the background before I realised that all that stuff about "we" and "you" was actually an excuse for the pathetic attempt introduction of the name.

So if I was going for the technical correct answer, I'd vote for the first one.
The cynical answer would be: "it means that marketing shows our audience like retarded names, so we followed up on the wii with this!" *.
...but in all honesty: I can't but vote for "it doesn't mean anything really". Those who think different** can try to convince me there's a reason for the second "i" in "wii".

*the Ouya sure is going for the same marketing segment here :P
**that's an incidental pun. For a change, it has nothing to do with apple.

The reason for the second 'i' in Wii, as I said in my first post, is that the two 'i's represent two people playing together.

*sigh*

I understand you see that as a reason. Personally, I wouldn't go beyond that "it is supposed to" you used in the introduction post.

To put it differently:

The U in WiiU is supposed to be about 'you' in a similar way that a piece of colorful barf on canvas is supposed to be art.

I saw it in a facts book, and it said that Iwata chose the name for that reason. Although, of course, the other reason, as seen in KingVamps' post, was that 'wii' sounds like 'we'.

it means "the person holding the tablet". As that's the focus, rather than just "Wii" (the various people playing and playing together).

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

    Booo.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.
  • Veho @ Veho:
There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
