Hacking Why do all the best 3DS hackers refuse to share their methods?

If you go on smealum's website and read his article about ssspwn you will see why it hasn't been released. If you don't feel like going onto his website, here's the relevant information.

Generally speaking, the thing that’s been stopping me (and others) from releasing working exploits has been the fact that they might be used for piracy. Fortunately, that should not be a factor in this case, as by its very nature, ssspwn can not by itself allow piracy. That’s right, it’s the sweet spot that gives us just enough to get awesome homebrew code running in arm11 user mode, but not enough to break the system bad enough to let anyone do whatever the hell they want. As such, I personally have no qualms with releasing the exploit into the wild.

You might be wondering why there isn’t a download link available yet. The reason for that is that, as I mentioned, ssspwn has yet to be fixed. In my opinion, it would be dumb to burn such a nice vuln on just 6.3 when we know full well that we should be able to use this on 7.x, and possibly even 8.x+ with some work."

I get that they have the right to not give out the info/code that they have found but when they start showing PoCs of what they are doing then they are bringing it on themselves when nothing is ever released. Of course people will expect to get to use it themselves when there is a "look what I can do!" video/pic/post.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about them being attention whores. Don't show something off if you're not going to release anything. Because when you do, whatever reasons you give in not releasing them automatically comes under scrutiny and usually it falls apart.

Then again being said attention whores, not showing off what they did is contrary to why they are hacking the 3ds. I mean why hack the 3ds if you can't rub your brilliance in us lesser mortal's face.

Magicians are meant to have secrets to their tricks.

Check out the definition of hacker and/or look at the established history of hacking. Compare it to the so called 3ds hackers and you will get my point. If you don't that means you're suffering from something called denial.

If you check the definition of hacker, it nowhere says that they must release everything they do. And if you check properly, nobody of the 3ds scene so-called hackers ever describes themselves as a "hacker" by these words, so they are not bound by this category in which you push them. They are free to do as they wish and not as you wish.

Whilst I can see both points of view it boils down to the simple fact that they can do whatever the hell they like,and for whatever reason they like, even if it is to be attention whores would this thread not be giving them exactly what they want, there are certain people who I completely ignore as I know they are simply doing it for attention whoring and the simplest thing to do is simply give up on expecting stuff, if it's released its released if not, no amount of whinging will change it

Are you saying that the hacks in question will work with current firmware and are prone to being blocked by Nintendo? The only people getting blocked by Nintendo are those that update their consoles. I don't update my 3DS anymore so Nintendo isn't going to block me from anything that was in the first post.

False.

There are publicly known exploits for up to 6.x. For 7.x and 8.x, it's unknown but logic dictates what nintendo doesn't know means they can't patch. So CHANCES are the known exploit will work on 7.x and 8.x.

I could go into the huge details about this so called new exploit but essentially, its rather limited to homebrew apps and games. Apps do not mean loading roms. Games do not mean loading roms either if you were wondering.

Are you saying that current vulnerabilities include the latest firmware? The last I knew was maybe 6.x firmware, there has been no mention of 7.x or 8.x vulnerabilities. I can't see why everything is kept secret. I saw a video where smealum injected a rom into a VC game, why hasn't that been released yet, I doubt it would anything to hurt future vulnerabilities in the firmware.

7.x has just been announced on his twitter.

As for not releasing means to inject rom into VC games. Take your pick from the following reasons. (Disclaimer: the follow list is not exhaustive)

1. Because piracy is bad m'kay

You're right, rom injection into a vc title would be piracy, I guess we'll have to wait for the 3DS homebrew to enable piracy thru emulators. And we all know that emulators have nothing to do with piracy.

I don't think homebrew via smealum's exploit will allow for emulators. It's severely limited.

If it's like what I thought then I don't see why not. Programs should have access to an ARM core, GPU, 96MB RAM and SD card.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. This is heavily dependent on smealum actually releasing SSSpwn.

Pointless thread is pointless.

Hacking, just like any other "art", requires a certain degree of background knowledge. If you don't know how to fry an egg, chances are that you'll fail miserably at making a souffle. If you don't have the faintest clue of how hacking actually works, having or not having the more in-depth information regarding the 3DS makes no difference at all.

It's been said a hundred times by now and I'll say it again - if you want to learn how to hack and reverse-engineer, grab some literature on the subject and learn the basics. Try to experiment yourself and if you find yourself in a pinch and you know what you're talking about, I'm sure other developers will give you a helping hand. If you stroll into some IRC channel and go "I iz sorreh can I haz sauce fur homebrew channel plox?", don't be surprised if you get kicked.

Don't waste the developer's time. If you don't have any idea about how things are done or even what the basic terms mean, don't expect anyone to hold your hand and show you the ropes from the bare basics to the more advanced, platform-specific issues. Don't bite more than you can chew, don't try to take more than you can give. Nobody's going to babysit you just because you asked nicely.
