What were your favorite games from this past decade?

games_of_the_decade.jpg

As 2019 comes to a close, so does the decade. The past ten years have provided some of the best that gaming has ever had to offer, beginning with the tail-end of the seventh generation, and closing out right as companies have announced successors to their eighth generation hardware. What better way to celebrate the end of a decade than reminiscing and remembering some of the best of the best?

So, that begs the question; what were your top ten favorites games that released from 2010 all the way to 2019? We’ll be taking a community vote, to figure out the GBAtemp community’s essential and most-loved video games from this decade.

To clarify, games that were given a re-release or cosmetic remaster shouldn’t be considered. For example, Valkyria Chronicles released originally in 2008, but received a PC port in 2014, and a 1080p remaster for the PlayStation 4 in 2016. Neither of these newer versions of the game added new content, outside of graphical improvements, and are essentially the same game with a new coat of paint. If, however, a game was ported to a new engine, remade from the ground-up, or had substantial changes made or content added (Ratchet & Clank, Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia, etc) then it’s fair game. If you're confused as to when a game released, you can always check its release date on Wikipedia! (note: count the initial release date in the west, not a delayed PC port that came out the following year, or localizations that released one year in NA, but multiple years later in EU/AU).

Example:
2010: Fallout New Vegas
2011: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
2012: Persona 4: Golden
2013: Fire Emblem: Awakening
2014: Danganronpa 2
2015: Rocket League
2016: Superhot VR
2017: Sonic Mania
2018: Dead Cells
2019: The Division 2

This gives us a chance to have some fun, discussing some of our favorite games, explaining why we loved them, while reflecting on the previous decade. Then we can pit all the years against each other, to figure out which Pokemon game is going to win this vote, because let's face it, Pokemon always wins! Have fun!

Overwatch was the best team based fps, with TF2 coming in an extremely close 2nd.
Digimon world cybersleuth and bowser's inside stories are my favourite RPG.
and my favourite game overall was either Undertale, Minecraft or Overwatch.
Did you know they made a remake in 2019 of bowsers inside story? It made alpha dream bankrupt though. They released it for the 3ds even though the 3ds can play ds games

The Yakuza series, Ace Attorney, and Castlevania: Harmony of Despair.

Almost forgot about Warriors Orochi, Dynasty Warriors Gundam, Hyrule Warriors, and Fire Emblem Warriors.

I will be that dude and say that a decade goes from year 1 to year 10 ( so this decade started the first of January 2011 and will end on the 31 of December 2020).
You are welcome :P

I just went through the games by year
I don't think I played much released beyond 2013 that I care about enough to note in this, though I also appear to have missed a bunch of notables (Witcher 3, Cuphead, Spiderman, Deus Ex Fall and Mankind Divided, and Elite:Dangerous for instance). Most of the things and big devs I liked turned cash in nonsense or just mediocre, while some 2d indy stuff was nice we had little and less in the way of smaller devs doing interesting things, and the likes of the 3ds also lacked the interesting 2d stuff as well. Looking at this year I don't think I played a single new release save for the Medievil demo.
Of the 2010 through 2013 though I could probably give you an entire 10, indeed some of those years manage it by themselves -- Resonance of Fate, Deadly Premonition, Mass Effect 2, Civilization V, Divinity 2, Nier, Alpha Protocol, Dead Rising 2, Vanquish, Just Cause 2, Perfect Dark XBLA, Fallout: New Vegas, Pac Man CEDX, Scott Pilgrim XBLA (got a better beat em up released more recently?), Bomberman XBLA and Metro 2033 all being 2010 alone, and it is not like 2011 started slow or ended up a slouch either.

Making a category of biggest surprise.
Zelda Breath of the Wild. All the early footage I saw had all the hallmarks of a dev biting off far more than they could chew. While such things were plainly evident in the end result that it was just mediocre/run of the mill rather than awful was actually a surprise.

Batman Arkham City
Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Age
Control
Alien Isolation
The Last of Us

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

2010: Deadly Premonition
2011: Catherine
2012: Persona 4 Golden
2013: Papers, Please
2014: Wasteland 2
2015: Rocket League
2016: Doom
2017: What Remains of Edith Finch
2018: God of War
2019: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
yay for Deadly premonition, I also love the game's story, but I totally cannot handle the clumsy gameplay. Wish it had been more polished. The ending was so depressing.

(breaking the rules here) 2017: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
2019: Mario Kart Tour

I could go on all day talking about the games above, but it would take up a lot of space on the page... I'm just going to say I had a lot of fun playing these games (mostly online). I did have a few offline local multiplayer experiences, with MK7 in May-August 2012 and MK8DX in April 2019 and August 2019 to TBD.

I barely know what I played this last year, but among the games I have good memories of are Hollow Knight, Stardew Valley, Pokemon Sun, Botw, Steamworld Dig and Arkham City (hope that's 2010s)

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.
