I bought my R4I card from newegg.ca
Does anyone know if it comes with a time bomb?
Depends on what cart it is, post a picture of it.
Just get the same flashcart I use: R4i Gold 3ds RTS plus. I've never had any issues with it, and it certainly doesn't have any kind of timebomb. (Get the Kernel from here, not from r4ids.cn as that one doesn't seem to work).
Yeah, that is the best one out of all the R4 clones. Don't know why the r4ids.cn kernel wouldn't work though, it should be the same file.

Yes it's the new card from last month but I'm pretty sure that R4i 3DS RTS cards from the same website are affected, too (tho I don't own one - I can't test it on my own).

That's a wild guess by you. We can only speculate about the reason for the timebomb. Another reason might be to force users to update the kernel so that there are no issues by outdated kernels.

I have a r4i 3ds rts from r4i-sdhc (.) com and i patched ysmenu to autoboot and bypass the timebomb. Could also work on your card. All files stolen from RetroGameFan.

too bad the compatibility suffers. A lot of the later games freeze during certain sections on r4i-sdhc.com (and r4isdhc.com) cards using ysmenu. Golden Sun will, for example, not boot to the title screen most of the time. Pokemon Black/White/B2/W2 will not let you start a new game, they'll freeze when the game asks for your name, etc.

I'm kinda confused... I got a R4 3DS Gold Pro card for a review for free and it is indeed from r4isdhc.com, so does it have a timebomb? If yes how can I get around it or remove it completely?

To be sure that it have or not set the year of the 3ds to 2030 or so....if red message shows up so yeah you have it.

To prevent it you can either update the kernel each year or just set the date to an old one.

How to bypass a timebomb :
  • Update the kernel every year (availlability may vary)
  • Change the System Clock in DS Settings (You can do it for only the DS i think...)
  • Install YSMenu on your card (Compatibility may be affected)
  • Switch to something like TwilightMenu++ (formerly known as TWLoader...) (Compatibility could vary, especially on DSi Games)
  • Change your flashcart (a bit extreme but works) (Another r4, a DSTT, an Acekard, a DSONE/DSTWO/DSTWO+ or a Gateway [Overkill])
The timebomb is caused by the kernel, it can be avoided by flashing another kernel, however, you would need to reverse-engineer your own cart and make your own kernel... You can test a timebomb by changing your date to something higher than 2023 i think... If a message shows up, it contains one.

NO, a "timebomb" won't make your house explode after a certain time, don't worry...

As fas as I know, flashcarts with Timebomb are: R4i sdhc 3ds rts, r4i b9s from R4i-sdhc.com, R4i gold pro, R4i dual core, R4isdhc rts lite 2019/2018/2017 or any old version cards from R4isdhc.com, R4i gold eu 3ds from R4i-gold.eu.

Flashcarts without Timebomb are: R4i gold 3ds rts, R4i gold 3ds plus. Stargate 3ds and Sky3ds+.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
