the 1080 ti is a step above the base 1080, it has higher clock speeds, more cuda cores and more vram, it's actually one of the best graphics cards of all time, and nvidia made a mistake releasing it as it was
founder's edition is just the reference edition of a card, typically the worst variant, look into another brand, and avoid asus
1080 ti is that good. 1080 ti came out 4 yrs ago. PS5 has graphics of a 4 yr almost 5 yr old pc hardware. 5 yrs is alot behind thats an entire console generation. Only advantage of ps5 is raytracing with its AMD RDNA gpu, but AMD's raytracing isnt as good as Nvdia's

Reviewers tested PS5 graphics and it's comparable to a 2080. And a 1080 ti is comparable to a 2080 when they tested that card.

I remember when the 2080 super came out lots of reviewers said "we get it nvidia you can make a 1080 ti". Or said "I miss the 1080 ti" perfrmance was that great when it came out.

2080 super was like 10% more performance and 27% percent less v-ram for the same price point as the 1080 ti initial launch price. Its no wonder people barely bothered with the 20 series gpu. Especially when it was $100 cheaper when 20 series launched as they were getting rid of last remaining stock. Great bargain for people that didn't buy into raytracing hype.

As many people have said you should upgrade to 16gb of ram, a 3770k and something gtx 1080 level (1080, 2060 or rx5700)

actually no, the 2080 was weaker than the 1080 ti, the 2080 super brought it up to par and made it roughly 2% faster than a 1080 ti

he has a gtx 660 ti, there's probably a lot he wants to do that he can't do
A lot of games will run quite adequately on a GTX 660 Ti – not at max settings, of course, but then hardware capable of running everything at max settings will be disproportionately expensive. That's why I think it is useful to have a goal in mind.

But that's just my opinion, I guess.

And what about 2080 Ti? Do you think a price around 800 and 900 dollars is good enough?
Get a 3070 if you can - even regarding the availability it should be cheaper than an used 2080 ti.

2012? Buy build a new one. Ryzen 3600X, 3700X and 3800X series chips are very good processors for a good price right now. And with 32GB of DDR4 3600 CL14, you won't regret it!

But then there's the dedicated memory it uses: only 8GB, compared to the 11GB the 2080 Ti uses, and I want to future-proof it. Is 8GB still good enough to last?

Sell it first then build a new one! since you're gonna buy a high end one go for rtx 30 series and i7 to i9 processor for future proof. But if you can't afford that much, try i5 to i7 processor and rtx 20 series will help.

Valid point however until more than 8 GiB are really relevant you are perfectly fine with a rtx 3070.

Some reviews shows 2080 super around 10% faster on average on stock speed. Overclocked 1080 ti can reach its performance.

3600 is good for just gaming. This is if he's playing at higher res where cpu matters less. At 1080p 5600x would be good. If he's multi tasking and streaming a 3700x would be good. Or 5900x for multitasking at 1080p. 5900x is just better value wise then 5800x.

He'll be good with 3200 cl16. It's good price to performance.

No $500-600 should be the limit for that card. You will get more V-Ram then 3070 and roughly the same performance..

OK, let's say that I want to buy a new PC, since several of you say that I'm overdue for a new motherboard: What are your thoughts on this? Is it good for its price?

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
