I'm really thinking it might be a falty contact in the adapter or even inside the 3ds. Like I said , a few days ago I closed the game, left the 3ds on the home menu, closed it and when I went back from sleep mode after a few hours everything that was in the SD was not showing on the screen...
Dump those titles into CIAs to eliminate the guesswork if they're bad installs or had their data corrupted.

Once you know they're good, switch over to using a different standard-to-micro adapter.

Use your 3DS as-is and observe if those game crashes happen again. If they do, you next look into using Luma3DS v9.1 for sdmc:/boot.firm or repair the 3DS firmware with CTRTransfer + system update.

Yeah no problem with the games... just finished dumping them, including Pokebank. Now I'll keep playing and see if the problem happens again. Thank you so so so much!!
I'll keep updating here if the crash returns.

If you have a spare SD card, you can test if the crash happens on a good setup.
  1. Copy everything off the spare SD card. (The smaller, the better.) Recommended: 4 GB capacity minimum 8 GB or bigger capacity (forgot to account for the fact PKMN: USUM is a big game)
  2. Reformat it in FAT32 + 32 KB cluster size using Windows File Explorer or guiformat (if bigger than 32 GB).
  3. Full Write + Verify the empty card with H2testw. (This is where having a small card really helps.)
  4. If no error was reported, delete the *.h2w test files.
    • A hardware failed card must be discontinued and replaced. For the replacement card, go back to step 1.
5. Build a reference SD setup using the CFW starter kit. Do not add your main setup.

6. Install a fresh copy of Pokemon Ultra Sun.
7. If you have a previously made backed up save, use Checkpoint or JKSM to restore the save.
8. Recheck if the crash in Ultra Sun occurs after using sleep mode.
The above steps is to ensure you have a super clean SD card setup.
  • (A) If a crash occurs, something is probably wrong with the 3DS firmware.
  • (B) If a crash does not occur, something is wrong with your main SD card or its setup.
Thank you so much for this. I did this exactly (except for the quadruple reformat) and it finally fixed the random crashes I kept getting on my Pokemon Omega Ruby cardridge even after updating to Luma 10.0.1 where I got the crashes beforehand.

I want to do this same process on my main SD (the test one has only 4GB) without losing the 2 games and the saves I have on there from the freeshop. Can I just copy and paste the entire Nintendo 3DS folder after I'm done with the process or do I need to keep anything else? I don't have any special apps that wouldn't already be on the starter pack.

I see too many people having issues running Pokemon games who are not doing their due diligence checking their SD cards.

When it comes to data corruption, my advice is the same as always.
  1. Copy everything off the main SD card to the computer.
  2. Quadruple reformat.
  3. Full Write + Verify the empty card in H2testw. Ensure your card isn't [ fake / faulty / dying ].
If the card was found to have a hardware problem, it will need to be retired. A bad card cannot reliably hold your data intact. Repeat steps 1-3 for the replacement card to protect yourself from consumer fraud.

4. Delete the *.h2w test files, and copy everything back to the SD card.

Path (A) - If the (original) main SD card passed in H2testw.

5A. Backup all the saves + extdata with Checkpoint or JKSM.
  • If the save manager app crashes, skip this step. Redundancy in backing up saves will be found in the later step 11A.
6A. In GodMode9 v1.9.1 (or newer), hold (R)-shoulder and press (A) on [A:] SYSNAND SDSearch for titles.
7A. Hold (L)-shoulder and press (RIGHT) d-pad to highlight all titles in yellow.
8A. Press (A) → TMD file options...Verify file.
9A. Plug in the AC adapter, close the clam shell, and set the 3DS aside. Leave it alone.
The report will be ready when the notification LED blinks green. It'll tell you which titles failed to match their expected SHA-256 hashes against their *.tmd (title meta data).

10A. If titles were found to be corrupt, write down a list for the ones that will need to be reinstalled. Find and collect replacement CIAs.
11A. Backup the saves (again) but this time with CTRTransfer (Type D9) - Rebuild 3DS Database → (C) Manual → (1c) Backup Saves
12A. Install the replacement CIAs from step 10A with FBI.
  • :!: WARNING: Reinstalling a game title's CIA (000040000XXXXXXXX) will overwrite and delete its save.
13A. Restore the saves with the gm9 script from step 11A using (2c) Restore Saves.
14A. Restore missing tickets with faketik.
15A. Mass unwrap HOME Menu gift icons with Cthulhu.

Path (B) - If the (original) main SD card failed in H2testw.

5B. Backup all the saves + extdata with Checkpoint or JKSM.
  • If the save manager app crashes, skip this step. See the next step 6B.
6B. In GodMode9 v1.9.1 (or newer), run the CTRTransfer (Type D9) - Rebuild 3DS Database(B) Full(1b) Backup CIAs & Saves
  • Note #1: To prevent accidental misuse, a safety mechanism was built into this script's option. You must carefully read the ~ INSTRUCTIONS ~ and description found in the top screen. An outside action is required before (1b) actually runs.
  • Note #2: If titles could not be converted back to CIAs, these can be assumed to be corrupt. You will need to provide replacement CIAs for these. Look for the log dump:
    • sdmc:/gm9/out/cias (proper)_<ID0>/missing_titles.txt
7B. As specified in the ~ INSTRUCTIONS ~, reinstall the CIAs with FBI.
  • :!: WARNING: Reinstalling a game title's CIA (000040000XXXXXXXX) will overwrite and delete its save.
8B. Restore the saves with the gm9 script from step 6B using (2b) Restore Saves.
9B. Restore missing tickets with faketik.
10B. Mass unwrap gift HOME Menu gift icons with Cthulhu.

Hi, just to get back to you I did all this and neither my SD card nor any of the CIAs turned out to be corrupt. However I have played Omega Ruby for 6 hours the past 2 days on my main SD and didn't get a single crash. I think installing the cfw on my test SD also fixed on my 3DS whatever was causing the crashes (I have some icons on my main SD that I didn't have before so I'm assuming I reset part of the cfw on the 3DS itself)
Anways just wanted to say thanks for your help, your posts on this forum are a godsend for newbies like me!
