Well... before you update, you're supposed to put the ORIGINAL theme back on. I've never tried updating if you have a custom theme on, so I don't know what would happen. If you have .ctf themes and update, nothing will happen. If you attempt to put one on AFTER the update, then yeah, you'll probably get a semi-brick.

Is there some program that adds protection to the folders in the memory stick? Those bastards at the store where I bought mine turned all my folders into .exes after they copied 3 gigs worth of games that they owed me! I can't backup or copy anything at all, formatting will make me lose my saves, again.

Hm... good question. All I know of is a program that adds a password when you're playing a game and then put it on "hold" with the power switch. Then when you switch it back to normal, it asks for a password. However, I'm pretty sure it doesn't work when in the XMB. I'll search around and let you know if I find something.

Thanks! I think they probably did it so I can't copy off their isos or to force me to actually pay for games if I ever want some new ones.

Okay I don't know if this is the best place for this but I've looked all over the internet trying to solve this issue with my PSP and this forum looks the most likely chance I may have!

Alrighty my issue is that when plugging in my psp to my laptop via USB, I access My Computer and then Removable Disk [F:], but there is nothing inside, no root files no nothing. Even more perplexing is that I accessed the properties and it said that there was no space used, and that the max space was 880kb, when my PSP Memory stick is 1G. I can still access the games, photos and music that I've previously put onto my PSP this way via the PSP but I can not access the files that contain them or anything else on my Memory stick via the USB connection. I hope I have explained that clearly enough, is there any way this can be fixed? Is this a common fault? When I plug the usb cable into my other ports on my laptop my computer does register that its a PSP device, so this makes me feel that it is unlikely to be the USB cable. I am hoping that it is NOT my memory stick! My PSP still accesses all the information on it just fine. Please help!

How to use cwcheats on PSP?
Dude, read the first post. You just download the file and put it in your seplugins, then activate it through the recovery menu. This should all be listed in the official CWCheat site, or in the readme that usually comes with the download.

@selvetarm: That's very strange, indeed. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps you don't have the necessary drivers installed. I would recommend going here

http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=20983

And downloading the thing that says PSP Type B driver English version.... download, unrar, install, reset the computer, then try plugging in the PSP and see what happens.

Another reason could be that the memory card is fake... where did you buy it? Have you tried using a different memory card? Have you tried using a different computer?

i never got a confirmation if i can just click on network update in psp firmware 4.01 and it will install a cfw not ofw
Yes, I can guarantee you it installs custom firmware. I think this feature was added a long time ago, back in the 3.71 days. I'll see if I can find more info on that later, but I know for sure that it will do that for 4.01m33

Those themes look rather interesting. More and more, I'm wanting to update, just for the hell of it, and I'll need to do so eventually anyway.

Looking at savegame-deemer, it seems to be able to do what I want, namely, keep my saves alive when I update. Actually, I take that back now. It seems to only work when you actually save, and...well, I'd rather not go through the trouble of having to load every ISO and save the game again, you know? Is there anything else I can do to ensure that I don't break my saved games? If I have no other option, I will attempt to deemer them all, however. =P

I'm pretty sure I know what to do with the new iRShell. Since I'm upgrading from 3.90, will I need the fatMSmod addon thing? Running a Slim in case it matters.

M33 Network update was added in 3.80 M33. However, always check in your recovery menu config options that it's going to connect to the M33 network rather than the Sony network, otherwise you'll update to an official firmware by accident. (By default it should be on M33 but if you want to be sure...check!)

Thanks for confirmation, xist.

@Doomsay: Why are you so worried about your saves? I've updated my PSP like 3 or 4 times since I got it and I NEVER had any of my saves not working/corrupted.

Well, that's just it. All that hard work gone, you know? You're a gamer, ever accidentally save over your best gamesave for whatever game (or better yet, have someone save over it for you)? Same idea. I hate losing my work, especially to something as innocuous as a simple firmware update. But all the same, I think I'm gonna try to update now, and my saves are on my computer so at the very least, they'll be preserved in some form.

Should be amusing. *click*

Update: Well, 5.00 M33-4 is on the PSP, iRShell...uh, whatever is up and working, and I've installed the fatMSmod thingy. I think I'm good to go, thanks for all the help (and fish). :3

Deemer is the only option for those games that you've played on a firmware lower than intended, and then saved. However, if you made all your important saves on 3.90, then it's unlikely that you'll encounter any corruption at all after the update.

If not, you could always just back up your saves to your computer, update, and then see what happens. If they were corrupted, then you still have the backups to rely on.

They're not really corrupted but simply appear as corrupted on the newer firmware. Therefore it won't help just having a backup because it would still register as corrupt on the newer firmware.

Edit...but as i said since the jump is from 3.90 and not earlier there's a good chance that saves made on that firmware are unlikely to be affected.
