Currently running a Gateway laptop as my main machine:
15.6" 1366*768 multitouch (10-point) display
Core i5-3337u (dual-core, multithreaded, 1.8Ghz base clock, boosts to 2.7Ghz, could probably OC it safely to 3Ghz if I felt there'd be any real benefit)
Intel HD4000 integrated graphics (nothing fancy, but still plays Skyrim, ME3, and what little I played of the Elder Scrolls Online beta without much issue)
8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
750GB 5400RPM hard drive
Empty SATA optical drive bay - been debating as to whether I want to put in a cheap Blu-Ray drive or an adapter for a second HDD, but I don't really need either.
Dual-booting Windows 8.1 and Linux Mint; I'd probably add OSX if there were any way to get my wireless adapter working with it.

Also have an oldish HP (2007 Vista Business machine) in the living room - C2D E6600, 2GB of RAM, a cheap 24x DVD drive, and whatever SATA HDDs we could salvage from the older living room PC, upgraded to Windows 7. Doesn't see much use unless someone's broken their laptop or tablet, though.

OS: Windows 8.1 64 Bit
CPU: Intel Core i7 4770(non-K) (running with stock cooler; Only hits 50 degrees when maxed so no need for fancy cooling)
RAM: 8 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 1600Mhz (8-8-8-24)
Motherboard: ASUS Z87I-PRO
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4600
HDD: 120 GB Samsung SSD 840 EVO (for OS)
2TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM (for storage)
Just built it a month ago. Still need to buy a graphics card (GTX 770 or an 860 when the new cards are released).

Are you guys all on a budget or something? Highest amount of RAM you guys so far only got 16GB. I still need more storage on the box.

*snip*

There's practically no need for more than 16GB of RAM for most applications, wasting money on more RAM when you can put that into a CPU/GPU is a waste.

You RAMDisk or something?
yes and I also run VMs so I can run old stuff. I use a 32GB RamDisk, I don't have it running all the time.

That is because I don't do anything you do that is considered "practical". This is my workstation and gaming rig.

CPU: i5 3570k 3.4ghz OC'd to 4.2ghz
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL9 @1.5V UDIMM
GPU: Palit GeForce GTX 460 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
SSD: OCZ Agility 3 AGT3-25SAT3-90G 2.5" 90GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
HDD: 12x 2TB WD Green Drives (mixed batches), using Stablebit DrivePool and SnapRAID 2x Parity.

I use this system for games, emulation (PS2 and Wii run great), and general purposes. It's air cooled with a 4 pipe heatsink and a 120mm fan. It rarely spins up enough to hear it.

The Drive array gives me 20TB of storage space. I've use 18TB of it. Using DrivePool it looks like a single large drive. Using SnapRAID I'm decently protected from disk failure. I don't use raid since it's hard to work with when growing arrays and replacing drives. Also, when accessing a raid, all the drives spin up. In my setup, only drives containing needed data spin up. I can also get a raid-0 like speed boost by duplicating the data I want to have move faster. In most cases I just use my Solidstate where disk speed is an issue.

I've had two drives become corrupt, and one drive died. SnapRAID had me covered. I've also used it to undelete files and restore original files. It's a cost effective backup-like solution.

The best part about this arrangement is that if I loose three drives, the data on the other seven is fine. In a raid scenario, I'd loose everything. Since it's storage, I don't mind waiting five hours for a full disk recovery.
