Sony to end support for the PlayStation Store on PS3, PSP, Vita

After rumors began brewing that Sony might finally put an end to PlayStation Store access on some of its older systems, the company has finally confirmed what some fans feared. Starting later this year, support for the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation Portable will be ending. As of today, they’ve also shut down the old web store that allowed customers to purchase games for those platforms on their computer. This decision comes as a result of Sony wanting to unify and focus on their more modern and current systems: the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The PSP and PS3’s store access will be the first to go, on July 2, 2021, with the Vita to follow shortly after on August 27th. Players will still be able to download their already purchased games even after those dates, but once July and August rolls around, any digital games for those platforms will become unavailable to buy.

I wish that were true, but there have been a number of recent Eastasiasoft physical-only Vita releases/pre-orders that will never be available via pkgj/nps

This is all about digital releases. Not physical. Regardless, I have never owned a Vita. Is there something preventing owners of the physical copies from dumping them?

Yes, physical carts can be dumped, but if it never received a digital release it can't be grabbed from the servers via pkgj/nps... it just makes it a little harder to track those titles down if/when they're dumped.
I only mentioned the physical release aspect in terms of titles that are yet to be published circumventing the digital store front by being physical only, and how that's no longer an option due to the lack of remaining physical carts (due to the production ceasing) there's a number of "in production" titles that will likely never receive an official release.
Maybe those game devs will end up selling vpk's of titles that couldn't officially be released, or maybe they'll never be released.

sony and everyone else too...

nintendo closed wii and dsi shops
xbox closed original xbox shop
sony is now closing ps3,psp and psvita

so everyone already closed an online store on their consoles.

i can see nintendo closing wiiu in like 2 years and xbox closing the xbox360 ones too.

people forget how many servers are needed to hold entire console library's that rarely get any downloads, so they are just there being an expense for years and years.
What I was trying (not very well) to say is while there is not much lost atm for ps3, psp and psvita as these systems are cracked wide open and almost all games can be found outside official channels . Same for wiiu or 3ds.
But Ps4 is something else and cfw (is it real cfw for lower models or just an option to load games?) is not widespread. If within 5 years the ps4 gets the same treatment as ps3 now, the endresult is less nice.

Unless some uberhack surfaces. A lot can happen in 5 years

don't worry, guys. this won't affect pkgi or pkgj on any system nor will it affect download from the god links. they'll still be active as all of them use the same links as official psn. and, the licenses on the ps3 are downloaded elsewhere. you just need content id and a 16 byte key in hex for that, which you can write out, so they'll never be gone even if dmca'd. and, of course, they wouldn't dmca their own network for the content links anyway.
Hopefully this is the case.

However, after killing PSN stores, I am afraid they would push a big update to haul off the dead consoles service for good in near future. They just don't want to rock the boat too quickly too much.

Well its now official, https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/support/important-notice/ They are shutting down shop for these shops. I thought id give all links to exclusive lists for each platform incase you want to see what games will be lost unless Sony let your stream the games via Playstation now or something like this. I am certain there will be a few games that people will want to have on the platform of their choice.

PS3 EXCLUSIVES

I wonder if there will be some sort of massive sale for these games or platforms? lest hope so but again it would be best if you could stream the games on Playstation Now instead. It would certainly give people a greater incentive to use or buy the service in future.

As much as I'd like to see some massive sale, many of these games are pretty cheap already. That, and there hasn't been a sale on the PS3 store for ages. Maybe they'll make an exception, but I don't see it happening

Yeah it will be intersting to see what happens. On the one hand sales could mean that Sony do not plan to let you emulate or stream the games officially and on the other hand they will, its just a sale with help keep the problem relevant then they will announce that you can stream it or something.

Another thing is the physical copies of games from these systems will rocket up in price especially all the rare games. Look what happend to Persona 4 Golden it used to be around £10 to £20 i saw on Ebay that people wanted £50 or more even for used copies. Crazy. Rpgs for the systems will also see a big price hike for their physical copies. I really really hope that Sony has a measure in place to let the customer play their games on PS4 and 5.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
