Sony Project Q handheld video leaked; shows its Android-powered OS

After announcing Project Q in May, their next gaming handheld aimed at streaming PS5 games in May, Sony didn't provide much details about this system except for a glimpse at its hardware. Well, that’s the official case as unofficially, there has recently been a leaked video that provides a closer look at the device’s hardware as well as software. The news was shared by Twitter user @Zuby_Tech:

While in low resolution, we can see from the video that the device’s OS, clearly an early and unpolished version, is Android-based. We can see a familiar Android launcher/app drawer, navigation buttons as well as some Android test apps. A “QC Test” app apparently indicates that the handheld packs a Snapdragon chip.

Based on the video, it appears that the handheld - likely a prototype - is also a single unit, as opposed to having detachable controllers like the Switch. In a separate tweet, Zuby_Tech also shared some additional pictures of the device, including one with the screen module remove and exposing part of the device’s innards:

As these are unofficial videos, you might want to take this news with a pinch of salt but considering that the device will run on a version of Android, it suggests that it could be used for more than just streaming PS5 games. Options could range from cloud gaming to official emulators to loading unofficial emulator APKs; but its potentials will depend on its specs and we'll have to wait for the official word from Sony.

What do you think of the Project Q? Are you looking forward to this handheld?

I don't think that anyone gives a single shit about a handheld device that you cannot use unless you have a PS5 by either paying scalper prices or lucking out.

Again, what were they drinking when they decided to just copy a Wii U?
They were thinking controller manufacture price is low + a 720p android tablet is cheap. Selling it for $300 is crazy good deal for Sony, since a lot of people will just blindly buy this.

Except it's literally a streaming gaming device.
If it's held in the hand while gaming, you could say that it's a handheld gaming device...
But by that definition a game controller is also a handheld gaming device. lol

In my opinion it's a handheld gaming device, But not a handheld game console.
(Unless off-course they allow you to download android games locally on it. That would sort of make it a handheld game console/tablet)

No, you're trying to redefine what peripherals and handhelds are. This is not a handheld device because it doesn't work without being tethered to another console.

Handheld devices are portable and self-contained, they function independently without the need for external connections. Peripherals, like controllers, rely on being connected to a primary device (such as a gaming console) to work as intended.

If we later find out that it has onboard storage and allows full game downloads for play without a connection to your home console, then we can call it a hybrid handheld.

Guys? Can someone tell me what it is supposed to do exactly?
Because in the first thread, i though it was mentionned to be something like the gamepad of the wii u, as in no real hardware to run games, that it would only stream what the wii u actual console is running.
Now, reading what is said here...
Is it a streaming console like the wii u gamepad?
Or a streaming console as in a cloud gaming console?

You need to look up PS Remote Play, this is meant to work with that and the requirement of having a PS5 connected to the network won't change.

This is not to let you play games from the cloud without a PS5 and this is not a Steam Deck.

At least it can somewhat be sideloaded with a custom Android OS to be used as mobile gaming device. The future might hold something, but for now its still useless. :rofl2:

it allows you to stream games from your ps5. AKA: fucking useless!
Especially if overpriced, i mean if it really is what you say it is, then it should not be sold over 100 bucks, otherwise, it is overpriced imo. It is a controller with a screen, so it shouldnt be too much over a regular controller...

That's one definition, and I don't know where you got that definition from.

This is what google says:
noun: handheld device; plural noun: handheld devices; noun: hand-held device; plural noun: hand-held devices
  1. a piece of computing equipment that can be used in the hand, such as a smartphone or tablet computer.
"handheld devices capable of capturing and sending high-quality video"

And here is Wikipedias definition of a video game console:
A video game console is an electronic device that outputs a video signal or image to display a video game that can be played with a game controller.

oh and then you can check this out: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/game-console

I mean everywhere you look there's different definitions. But nowhere have I seen that a handheld gaming device has to play games locally.

And if it's running an OS like android and has different apps on it, then one could argue that it does not need to be tethered for operation. Game-Streaming from a PS5 is just another app on the device.

Hybrid handheld LOL

It's running Android and has an app for RemotePlay. But the device is meant to be used in a handheld configuration only. It may not be playing any games locally, but not all handheld devices play games. My camera is a handheld device and it doesn't play any games.
