Wondering if anyone is successfully playing games from downloads for free?

I did a soft mod on my WiiU and waiting to purchase until someone got this machine working correctly

The common mods most people are using are not entirely "soft mods." They require an "unpatched" console to be put in "RCM mode." This is done by shorting the 10th pin on the right-side joycon rail with a ground, either pin 1 or pin 7, or even the joycon rail itself. Then, you have to hold the Vol+ button while turning on the Switch.

People have used a multitude of methods for this, a small piece of wire can do it, or a piece of tinfoil, a bent paperclip, a small screwdriver, or what's known as an RCM "Jig." Jigs can be found pretty cheap online, and are highly recommended over the other methods, as you don't want to ruin your Switch by accidentally damaging the pins. Alternatively, once you're in RCM you can install "AutoRCM", which will cause the Switch to always boot with RCM and the jig will no longer be required.

But in RCM mode the Switch does nothing by default, the screen sits black, the backlight doesn't even turn on. The Switch is waiting for a payload to be sent over the USB port. You can send it that payload using a PC or an Android phone if you have the proper USB-C cables to do it. You'll have to send this payload every time you turn your Switch off and back on though, so many people buy a cheap "payload dongle" for this. It's basically a very small, battery-operated mini-PC that's sole function is to send a payload to the Switch. Common "payloads" include custom firmwares like Atmosphere, Kosmos (which is basically Atmosphere packaged with other tools), ReiNX, and SX OS. They are more or less the same with minor differences for the average end user, but SX OS is the only one that costs money.

Anyway, so long story short, with an unpatched Switch running any system version, you can mod it, but it's not a "softmod." If you have the right tools (an android phone or computer, a USB cable, and something to use as a jig) you can mod it for free. For around $10-$15 you can get a jig and a payload dongle which will make things much easier, but aren't required. Game backups work fine using NSPs, and there's also a plethora of homebrew available. You can run RetroArch, giving you access to a bunch of different emulators, there are custom themes you can install, several computer games have been ported (Doom, Half-Life (Xash3D), Duke Nukem 3D (eDuke32), Diablo (DeviluitionX), and more), you can run Linux, and most recently, you can even run Android and make your Switch act similar to an Nvidia Shield. It's pretty awesome.

Unfortunately, with patched Switches, they can only be modded using Deja Vu. Currently for end users this only works with system version 4.1.0. In the future, it may work for system versions 5.x - 7.x. There's currently nothing we know about for 8.x+, and there's a high likelihood that patched Switches on 8.x+ firmware (along with the new "Switch Lites") will never be exploited. One advantage of Deja Vu, however, is that it is a softmod, no jig or RCM dongle required.

Is there a YouTube for this?
