PSPUpdates said:
Sony UK boss confirms smaller, lighter PSP in the works
Posted Mar 13, 2007 at 05:16AM by Karl B.

After all the rumors and speculation, a Sony exec has finally gone on record to say that a redesigned version of Sony's PSP handheld is in the works.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, SCE UK managing director Ray Maguire told an invited audience of press, teachers and education specialists at the national launch of Sony's PSP in Education initiative that the current PSP is just the "first iteration", and that a "smaller, lighter" system will be introduced in the future.

Maguire also said that any redesigns would not affect the PSP's screen, which is apparently "fixed." Judging by Sony's track record of cutting the size and cost of their redesigned consoles since the PSOne was first introduced, a redesigned PSP could also presumably carry a lower price tag.

Following Maguire's statement, a Sony spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz that apart from firmware updates, no "immediate changes" are currently planned for the PSP. "In the longest term, of course we are always looking at ways to continue our platform development," said the spokesperson, "and this normal business practice is what Ray was referring to."

I always thought that as for height. A PSP redesign couldn't make it shorter in that dimension due to the size of the UMD's. If they can't do innovation like Nintendo, go with fashion on the redesign.

I have a psp, had a DS, and now have a DS lite. I think that the psp does not really need a redesign (size wise). sure the oft-rumored 8GB nand flash would be nice, but i dont see that happening at all. the size of the psp is perfect for me. if anything i would like a slightly larger ds lite.

SCE UK is always confirming things that U.S. and Japan are denying. Why is that?

I cant think of the other "rumor" that UK confirmed that U.S. and Japan denied, but it was either at the end of '06 or beginning of '07...

PSP is okay actually. I have both, but I'd have to say DS is better. Burnout rocks though

I have high hopes for a good redesign.

PSX - PSone. Oh that was nice.
PS2-Pstwo. Oh that was VERY NIIIIIIIICE.
PSP-PSPlite. ??????????????????

Although I love the PSP for the big screen when I bother having the time to convert the videos (I use my Vision M if I want video on the go) I still don't find the games much fun to play even though I have 3.10 OEA and access to a lot of ISOs. Okay, Guitaroo Man is fun that much I'll admit.
