Shenmue 3 kickstarter announced during Sony conference reaches $2m goal under 24hrs.

A new Shenmue game was announced during the pre-E3 Sony press conference. By the end of the conference (about 40 minutes later) the Kickstarter project had already raised over five hundred thousand dollars out of the 2,000,000 pledge!

At the time of posting this, the project already received nearly 600k USD in funding. Well done Sony!
Update: the project was successfully funded within half a day! Shenmue 3 will be a reality!

Small update for those that care:
The project is officially funded at about $2.06 million, and all of the $10,000 stretch goals are already gone with over 650 people putting in $500 for some small figures. I don't get people, but I guess fans do what fans do.

Watch Dogs runs like shit on the Wii U and Project C.A.R.S can barely run properly, well, no it just isn't able. 23fps is not acceptable at all.

You're asking for too much of a console that isn't very powerful.

You honestly think that Shenmue 3 will push the hardware? Either way, If ppl are willing to pay for a Wii U version, why not take the money. Also, Watch Dogs was decent on Wii U

Because

Sony might be doing something where it has rights on console version (why isn't it on Xbone)

It's not worth it for a console with such aweful sales

Undersed powered for what they want to do

Because if Sony is funding it, no Wii U. If they want the game to be expansive and look good, no Wii U. Developers don't like downporting. It hinders the intended experience. All because you're okay with a lesser experience doesn't mean developers want to put out a lesser experience to begin with.

I seriously doubt that's the reason. They say it themselves:

The first part is true, the second not so much. Pledges are a good way to measure interest - anyone can say "sure, I'll buy it", but that's no guarantee that he or she actually will. Dropping your wallet is because then the developer knows that you're willing to pay even before the project is complete. It's called "putting money where your mouth is", it has nothing to do with financing the project, you can't make an AAA game with 2 million bucks, it's a drop in the bucket.

implying that this will be handled like a AAA game whatsoever. the thing is, they sell you something that doesn't exist yet. this game could end up being complete crap and not living up to its predecessors at all. but oh well, people've already paid a premium price in advance. no take backsies. for now, they sell you nothing but the name. there could be any kind of crap packed in it when its done.

and they know very well about what size this stupid fandom is, they wouldn't need to measure that. they knew for years about how many games a new shenmue could sell. its not a gigantic amount and since the fandom isn't going to grow and people who haven't played 1&2 are probably not going to be very interested in a third game, it would never warrant a high investment. which is why I wouldn't expect the production cost to be set very high. mediocre graphics, mediocre gameplay, mediocre storytelling. you can make a game for cheap. and this is probably not going to be the game the fandom has been whining about in their sleep for a decade or so.

'lets measure interest'
theres actually not much interest. but what little is there is so desperate, they'd pay 10 times the average new game price right now, 3 years in advance!

Meh, it was going to be made regardless so I don't care so much about the Kickstarter publicity stunt. The better question is, will they change up enough of the Shenmue world to make it relevant to today's games? Yu Suzuki hasn't worked on any big title since...well, since Shenmue 2 AFAIK, so I'm hoping the game will both stay true to Shenmue's story and stay relevant with more..."modern" gameplay.

Curious how none of the stretch goals include ports to other consoles...
I think Sony can officially register the word "Exclusively" as their trademark.

"Exclusively"

It's the only fucking word that they said every damn 5 seconds.

I can assure you, most of that "exclusive" content will be DLC for other consoles down the road.
I could care less about their so called "exclusive" betas. That's just lame

So from my point of view the only good things out of Sony's E3 were MGS5 and FF7R, that's it.

I expect it was more of a publicity act than anything else. Sony didin't have to include it in their conference. Hell, Fallout 4 has been on the top sales list on Steam even though the Steam summer sale is ongoing. If that doesn't give prespective, I don't know what will.

In other words:
People are pre-ordering Shenmue 3 on Kickstarter?

That is currently correct, I'm sure. That's because Sony hasn't thrown their weight behind the project yet and put any restrictions in place. If Sony does directly fund it and the developers agree to the conditions of it, I'm sure those conditions will include home console level exclusivity. I assume PC will be left alone though because for whatever reason, Sony is okay with PC releases. I'm guessing because, at least currently, PC and home console gamers are still two largely separate audiences.

You're just too soft when it comes to the Wii U because as you're well aware the darn system is an utter commercial failure so it's wise for third party devs to completely avoid wasting any time on it at all.

And no, Watch Dogs was a turd on Wii U. Shouldn't have bought it.

I'd give a pass to Sony on that one, considering they're on the verge of bankruptcy, but let's not be a habit.

Now if Sega was to start a Kickstarter to build a DreamCast 2, then I would dive head first.
