Following the limited information released in April, we now have full details of the ROG Ally, including retail price, release date, and a full specs sheet. Boasting twice the power of Valve's ever-popular Steam Deck, ASUS aim to take on the giants, and given recent buzz, they might just have a chance.

The ROG Ally is set to launch in the UK June 13th for £699, with pre-orders going live via the ASUS ROG store today, and Currys May 16th. There will be two variants available eventually, with the Ryzan Z1 Extreme being available on the given dates, and a weaker base Z1 model following. The Z1 Extreme packs 8 cores and 16 threads, while the base Z1 will feature 6 cores and 12 processing threads. Both models are set to support AMD's Super Resolution upscaling technologies to boost graphical quality in more demanding titles.

Alongside the ROG Ally, the ROG XG Mobile external GPUs are being sold separately for the first time. This is something I previously talked about when looking at ROG's Z13 tablet, and it's good to see these more accessible to consumers outside of more expensive bundles. Announced to release are two variants, one packing Nvidia's latest and most powerful laptop-grade GPU in the RTX 4090, and the other being last generation's RX 6850M XT from AMD. These will retail for £2199 and £699 respectively, and allow you to dock your ROG Ally better graphical performance, putting the system closer to a gaming laptop when plugged in.

An odd note from the specs sheet is that the triggers of the Ally will feature Hall Effect sensors, while the analogue sticks notably will not. For those interested, you can find a full breakdown of the specs below:

The AMD card is a win in my books. That one’s currently available and goes for around £1000 pre owned on eBay due to the availability issues.

Seriously, why do all the “Steam Deck Killers/Switch killers” fail at realizing that the price is one of the largest contributors to their success? Like sure, these are always better in specs but the price points always narrow down the customer base to people who want these specs and have the extra money to buy these. Which almost always fails when you buy a Switch with multiple games or a Steam deck and have your entire library for far cheaper.

I think there is merit to this price point, especially when you consider the most popular Steam Deck flavour is the 512gb model. The area companies should be competing in, in my opinion, shouldn’t be the lowest price range. They aren’t going to beat Valve there. They need to position themselves as the next logical step from a Steam Deck, but not so high as to be something completely out of touch.

£699 is about the top end of what I would consider to be that next step up. Something like £650 would be more ideal in my mind though.

Windows = nope. Sorry but its called a Personal Computer for a reason, not only does MS not care about privacy but they're more than happy to remove crap and install crap on your PC without even telling you.

Plus Windows is woefully unequipped to deal with handheld devices, ironically they tried it with Windows 8 which was a disaster for them. Linux is slowly becoming the better way to game, at this point its only really missing HDR support and that is very work in progress. Linux is the only environment capable of providing a real handheld experience, Valve realised this and the other handhelds are rapidly following suit, turns out dealing with a desktop OS using a touchscreen, an analog stick and 8 buttons is not a great experience.
