I tried gpSP and it wouldn't load any GB or GBA games. I tried Sonic Advance 2 with it. Also I have an older build of the Genesis Plus one that runs Sonic 3 at near 60 FPS but with screen tear but the newer ones are just barely getting 30FPS. What happened? D:

So with the newest 1.4.0 stable I still have two Problems:

1. Gambatte save state laoding is still broken and crashes nearly everytime
2. The retroarch.cia does not load and stays on black Screen, however booting up cores is working, also changing to another core is working then

Anyone else with These Problems??

so i finally dared to try these newer releases and its giving me this "the sd card was removed" error when I try to start the retroarch.cia?

who decided it was a good idea to use white or baby blue text on transparently blue backgrounds?
the entire new menu is spaced out too much for 3ds screens, making it harder to find options or the right rom.
you still can't assign one button to two different 3ds buttons (like having both Start and X use the start button)
scanning rom folders seems to only scan like 20 files and other files cant be added individually?
why am i loading the quicknes core only to have the thing ask me what nes core i want to use to start a game? and quicknes i not even the first option, its the last.

if the PSP can emulate N64, the New 3DS is perfectly capable of emulating PS1 and probably N64 too.

these emulators are a mess, maybe the problem is they're working on too many at once. since they already split them for no reason on the 3DS why not do work to perfect one at a time? maybe that'd be better.

We have all heard that, and I've seen the n64 emulator for psp. Pretty damn laggy for normal gameplay in quite a few games. For a game like f-zero X, you have to go into single player practice mode. (if there is a better emulator, let me know)
The second issue is finding a good emulator to port in the first place. N64 emulation is difficult to develop.

Is genesis plus GX better than picodrive on the O3DS in terms of performance?

Broadly speaking, no, it's worse on O3DS because its more accurate and the O3DS struggles to run most Mega Drive titles (and Sega Master System) at a full locked speed. A handful of SMS titles (earlier, simpler ones) run perfectly however - although you do need to switch the FM sound emulation off to achieve this - and its the only emulator which can run SG-1000 and Game Gear titles regardless.

Use them both, but for O3DS Picodrive will probably be more useful.

oh dear and in addition to all that, in gpsp in the quick menu - control section, where you could save per game button configuration, you still can't reassign L and R,,,
and oh so many crashes even in the menu

yes, but the New 3DS is much more powerful than the PSP. if the PSP could do it, the New 3DS can do it better.
I know I'm not in a position of demanding anything and I don't want to sound ungrateful, but I think it could be done. and I really wish we had a good PS1 emulator since the 3DS resolution is actually perfect for PS1/N64 emulation. the lower screen even matches it perfectly ahah

The PSP didn't really emulate PS1, it played it more or less nativley. That's why it worked so well. Saying the 3DS isn't up to par and will "NEVER RUN PS1 PERFECTLY" Is probably mostly accurate, but a little too definite for people to say. I imagine it could be improved further, and be close to perfect with work. Just not sure we'll ever see said work.

its really not as simple as that. just because the n3ds has more hz doesn't mean it'll automatically outperform something else at emulating n64.

I never said that though, but it's pretty much a fact that the New 3DS is more powerful than the PSP in every way. not just because it "has more hz" but because of pretty much everything in it really ahah (even the regular 3DS is more powerful than a PSP btw)

I'm on the lesser informed side of this stuff, but I can tell you straight out that your understanding of emulation is massively incorrect. Power doesn't mean a darn thing. Arguable, the O3DS' raw power is greater than that of an original Xbox (Which can run Dreamcast games at a decent speed) and even rivals Wii, but the architecture is what hinders the system. You remember how there was a big stink over the Ice Climbers getting cut from Smash? It is because the architecture put limitations on what the developers could do with the AI, so they scrapped the Ice Climbers because the system couldn't run it properly (Or it just didn't work at all).

Also, for another example, I remember hearing a while back how the most optimized SNES emulator for a smartphone required close to a 3Ghz CPU before you could even hope to play games at full speed, and, even then, how much had to be compromised. Meanwhile, as far back as Win. 98, people have been able to play SNES games at full speed, and then there was that whole big stink that happened when Apple announced that you could play the latest PS1 titles on a Mac (This was before the 2000s).

So, the first thing you need forgot about when it comes to emulation on alternate devices is that raw power means something. It does help, but is second place in comparison to the system's architecture (Which is the whole problem with the 3DS).

Well by that logic, the PsP N64 emulator ran like crap, and those guys worked their butts off on it to get it that far. Probably not impossible on the N3DS, just not practical.

Has anyone ever got the RetroArch standalone app for 3ds to work? I always get SD card removed

try this to get it working

make sure to copy the retroarch folder in the .7z archive to the root of your SD, and check if "Core Dir" and "Core Info Dir" point to the correct folders (retroarch/cores and retroarch/cores/info respectively, you can also move them somewhere else if you want ofc).

if you don't want to install all cores, delete the corresponding .core files in the "Core Dir"

Quick 1.40 update from O3DS user:
  • Picodrive:
    • Genesis: Works perfectly
      • Games tested: Ecco the Dolphin, Phantasy Star 2, Zero Tolerance
    • Sega CD: Game speeds are all over the map when using the default settings (But, much better than before). At worst, the games run at half the speed they should. I believe the problem is caused when the emulator is reading the games directly from the disk.
      • Games tested: Dark Wizard, Double Switch, Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective Vol. 1, Silpheed, Sol-Feace
  • DOSBox: No change (IOW, broken)
