You can't get banned using Freeshop
Also it updates when new title keys are loaded to that site Freeshop loads the games from. Make sure you have it set in Freeshop settings to auto update.b

Doesn't the cache need to get updated also? afaik that's done manually and a title won't appear if it's not in the cache (even though it might be in the title keys)

I just have the settings set to auto update. I can't check it now as I am currently flashing my 11.4 nand back on my n3dsxl

You could get banned going online with a title not released in your region. See Pokémon SuMo ban wave.

Yes and no. The title keys are encrypted manually. The cache is updated automatically.

Correct, playing a pokemon game early will get you banned. this is because by doing so, you have a leg up on your competition.

It's not because the game was popular. It's to give everyone in the region a level playing field. This is why playing the other games early didn't get a ban.

You will never be banned for freeshopping inside your region. If you go online with a game that is a) not released in your region, and b) is planned for release there. you may get banned. But i think it will only be an issue for pokemon games.

There was game from another company that did that as well. I think Monster Hunter or something. I don't play it so I didn't pay too much attention to it.

Cruel doesn't maintain the cache anymore. Thankfully he shoved that off on someone else before he got send to jail and even then it's automated for the most part (it's done through Travis-CI) meaning anyone could take it over in case the other guy becomes incapable of updating the cache.

Q: Is there a 3dsx version?
A: No, and with the elevated permissions needed, it's not worth the trouble.

Sorry for the noob question guys, but I just want to make sure I understand this QA correctly. Does this mean that freeShop will not work with the New 3DS XL?

freeShop works on all systems if you have CFW. 3dsx means running it through Homebrew.

Thank you. New to the 3DS world, so still figuring this all out.

If one does not use Freeshop, then there is still the alternative of just copying roms to the SD card correct?

Where on the card are they supposed to go?

And can they be wireless transferred from a PC to the SD card using the built in microSD Management app?

If you have a hacked 3DS with a CFW installed, you can install .CIA files of 3DS games through FBI.
Obviously, you can't do any of this without a hacked 3DS.

If you have a gateway, you can let it load .3ds files on the SD card without installing them.
I recommend using Freeshop, but if you don't want that method, then use tiksweep. It installs all the tiks from that 3ds title site and launches the eShop after its done. Some games will have a button allowing you to re-download the game since tiksweep installed the tik for that game.
Yes it's illegal, but Nintendo can't see you're installing games from the eShop for free.

Thanks guys. I understand the CFW part, thats not an issue. Where Im a little confused is if everyone is just using freeShop to download games directly from Nintendo, why are there .3ds rom files around the net to be downloaded? Is there not a way to just use those to install a game once theyve been downloaded and put somewhere on the SD card?

.3ds are game dumps from retail copies. People use gateway to load .3ds files without installing them. But there is a way to convert a .3ds file to a .cia format.

.3ds are for Gateway users and freeShop doesn't have every game that's on the Nintendo eShop.

CP = child pornography. Apparently Cruel was a sick bastard. Good riddance. Now let's see someone with self-control fork this great app so it lives on! (You know, in case something on Nintendo's end breaks it's functionality)
Dammit guys. Here are the core things (feel free to link to this post in case you assholes ignore this):
  • TheCruel is banned and got sentenced to jail for Child Pornography. This was figured out by forum users by crosslinking various details (read 300 to 320 for details) and the mods banned him for it.
  • FreeShop as it is is NOT in danger in any shape way or form because of this. It's code is open source and anyone can check if it contains objectionable content. As of right now, it does not contain any.
  • TheCruel does NOT maintain the cache for freeShop, @ss23 does and he isn't currently in jail (nor is he planning to). If the cache method breaks at any point, it is trivial to switch cache sources anyway, with only a few lines of coding needing to be changed to point to the new servers and users needing to install and update to freeShop. See here for a simple writeup on how freeShops cache works in comparison to the similar tool, CIAngel.
  • @Minox (and by extension the mod team) already told everyone to BACK THE FUCK OFF and bring back discussion to freeShop.
Having said that, please refrain from discussing TheCruel's actions beyond this point. The dude's a sick bastard, we already know that and he got aptly punished for it. If it offends you to a personal level, write a damn Blog about it and do NOT shit up the thread. The thread is about freeShop, not about TheCruel.

On-topic: As it currently stands a new maintainer would be very useful, as I've seen at least one user who is willing to add a new feature to freeShop, and in the end that is all that matters. That this software gets expanded upon more and more. By far the easiest would be for someone who is interested to create a fork and appoint contributors to it. Having said that, here are some of the current and useful suggestions to the software that I've seen people make:
  • List the amount of free space available on the SD card (suggested by @jockep and he wants to work on it so I wish him the best of luck with it).
  • Adding flags for the KOR and CHN regions (suggested by @StarTrekVoyager )
  • Add the ability to use BCSTM as a music format to make a looping track. (suggested by @StarTrekVoyager )
  • Fix various bugs including amongst others: The download buffering, the mario strikers not downloading properly, freeShop crashing if you switch the download list during TMD install and many many more (suggested by lots of people in this thread)
  • Add theming support (suggested by many people, including me)
If you are a dev and are interested in coding any of this, feel free to do so. This is just a simple compilation of the primary things people seem to want out of freeShop, and I think I can safely speak for everyone that we need a new maintainer. If we get one, I'd say they should create a new thread and this thread should be locked to prevent the freeShop discussion from being killed while also getting everyone to shut the fuck up about The Cruel.
