Does slightly smaller stuff like 64GB work? It's a bit of a stupid question, but I don't want to find out my new, expensive card doesn't work.
Yes 64GB works fine. 64 is really the biggest card you could possibly need, unless you want to have every game ever made available on your console.

64GB = all games worth playing
128GB = pretty much every game (I haven't actually done the calculations to know if all games add up to less than 128GB)

I know that the 3DS officially supports up to 32GB SDHC cards, but I saw someone say something about a 128GB card being used. I can't remember-maybe he was talking about using it with a Flashcart, but do bigger cards work? I'd be glad to dig around for a certain model confirmed working.
I use a 200 GB sd that works just fine. Like others said before me, just format it to FAT32. Even with the enormous size of the sd, it adds maybe 1 second to load times, tops. Its really not noticeable. Gives me more than enough room for games, emulators, homebrew, music, video, whatever.
