After 3 and some change years (6.60 was released on August 10, 2011) the PSP long since hacked into tiny pieces has gotten a new firmware update. Currently only released in Japan, no word on when or if it will arrive elsewhere. You gotta love that word "stability". :tpi:

For PSP® system software version 6.61 update

From January 15, 2015, I was to start the update of the system software version 6.61.

  1. Use or non-formal update data to offer in our network or via UMD®, so you do not update other than how to inform the Company, please note. If you have made an update of the body function in the wrong state, not only does not perform the operation guarantee, and will be covered by the repair and warranty. In addition, there are cases where formal update is not available.
  2. System software update, please do not take place in the vicinity of the power outage time.
The main features that are updated in the system software version 6.61

  • In the system software, I have to improve the stability of behavior.

EDIT: Changelog added. Please note this is google chrome translated english so it's batshit crazy.

Probably makes your console compatible with Vita or PS4 games or something.

I hope not all softmods are dead and will release an update for it. Apparently it kills softmods when being installed (haven't tried myself, no idea if it prevents reinstallation, source:http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=972053&page=1).

Haven't seen a changelog anywhere so far.

EDIT: Someone on Reddit speculates it could be a late fix for the POODLE attack against SSL because the PS3 also got a rather late fix for that. http://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comme...s_psp_update_661_4_years_after_update/cnpof8j

Some of the more recent PSP units are still impossible to softmod with some methods to this very day, and interest is very low in developing workarounds.
It would be incredibly dumb for anyone interested in fan-translations or homebrew to install this update.

And it seems this update kills temporary CWF 6.60 at the very least.

I tought every PSP is softmod-able (maybe except the so called Street model, but nobody in his/her right mind should buy that garbage anyway).

all psp models can be softmodded. Some models can be permanently patched, while some needs a cfw starter each time it is powered off.
That's what I've thought. I knew for sure every PSP that's a PSP-3000 or earlier (including a Go) can be softmodded because I've bought a new 3000 in 2012, but I wasn't sure about E1000/Street because I never looked it up for that because I did not want to spend my hard earned money on the crap anyway.

I ran the update. The softmod I was using was called something like "Fast Recovery 6.60 PRO".

The softmod tries to launch, but the PSP just turns black and turns off. There's nothing like an error message saying you're not allowed to run this program or anything like that.

Yeah, this basically locks CFW from working (which I've found out sadly) I'm not sure if there's a way to revert back to an older firmware either, since my system automatically downloaded it (thinking it was just a ToS update) I was on 6.60 as well.

If it helps, this update will attempt to launch when you go online, visit the Playstation Store, etc.

Why are they even bother. The PSP isn't even sold anymore, and most stores have stopped selling games.

Apparently Pro not running on firmware >6.60 is built in, and it hasn't actually been tested whether it still works or not when that's changed.

http://wololo.net/2015/01/16/risen-from-the-dead-psp-firmware-6-61-is-now-available/
The currently untested things are the ME CFW, LME CFW, Pro CFW, 6.6x HEN and the downgrader.

All these listed programs have a firmware detection build-in, and therefore refuse to operate on firmware 6.61 (as of now).

A simply rewrite of the CFW installer will show if the software (“as is”) is still compatible with firmware 6.61, or if it has to be tweaked to fit the firmware 6.61

Is it piracy if it was released for free? Not in my opinion, but I also think it's not piracy if buying it isn't owning it, and it's not piracy if you can't buy it from the original creators anymore.
