If this topic is still stickied, it is still relevant, even if it has not been updated for a while! Don't look at the date of this post! ------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a simple topic to answer some simple questions: "Is there any progress?", "When will the 3DS be hacked?" .... There are two main hacks: Hardware: Flashcart companies focusing (mostly) on piracy and ROM playing, Software: Legal and open sources releases from community hackers and developers, focusing on Homebrew. Hardware A few flashcarts for the 3DS have been released: Gateway 3DS R4i 3DS Gold DELUXE 3DS Link Orange 3DS MT-Card Sky3DS They can play the currently dumped 3DS ROMs, but no (3DS) homebrew. All other flashcarts are NDS Flashcarts which can only play normal DS ROMs on the 3DS. More info: Comparison of Nintendo 3DS Flashcarts. You are encouraged to read the FAQ and the stickied topics which already contains all the answers. Software Software based solutions allow for playing 3DS homebrew, but can not load ROMs. There are currently 2 methods: The first solution is to use Fierce Waffle's ROP Loader. ROP Loader Homebrew development and release thread. The second method is by using smealum's Ninjahax exploit. You can find more about it here Emulators There are no emulators which play 3DS ROMs. Any 3DS emulators you find are fake. There are emulators which emulate the ARM chipsets and let you load some 3DS homebrew (and maybe 0's key re-signed ROMs). - Citra - 3DMoo - TronDS That is all the available information at the moment. Thread update log Update March 28, 2012: Following the usual trend of speculation threads ("when/how the 3DS will be hacked", etc.) ending really bad with flamewars and such, they're now discouraged to be opened. Feel free to post news about eventual hacking progress coming from a RELIABLE source (3Dbrew.org and such), though. ~raulpica Update December 16, 2012: We've heard the first rumblings of a new possible exploit. This absolutely does not mean that a true hack is in sight. (Even though the image posted by Yellows8 was called "We Hacked It") Don't go throwing your money at the computer screen just yet. ~Vulpes Update August 8th, 2013: The Gateway 3DS is the first Flash Kit to be released with 3DS ROM Support. It works through an exploit, meaning that the 3DS has not yet been "hacked". The Flash Kit is currently not working on 3DS firmware 4.5+, however the exploit can be installed on 6.x. The team advises users to never update their 3DS beyond 6.3.0. See their official site for more information: http://www.gateway-3ds.com/. Update March 1st, 2014: Re-formated the message to take new flashcarts and homebrew in account. Added a list of available Flashcarts, and a link to homebrew thread. Added the two emulators.
