NTRBoot Released!

It's here!

Info

@Normmatt has created a way to run B9S .firm files from bootrom via a DSi Flashcard and a magnet! This works on every 3DS on any firmware version.

For installation without a PC, user @TheCyberQuake has created a pack which will automatically install B9S and copy over essential starter homebrew from the flashcard's SD to the 3DS's. This will mainly be used for PC-less B9S installations. If you have a PC with you, use 3ds.guide. Read more here: https://gbatemp.net/threads/481141/

How does this work?

This works because of a flaw in the bootrom. Before the bootrom boots the NAND, it checks to see if Start+Select+X is held down, and if the shell is closed. If these requirements are met, it will boot an NDS cartridge from the bootrom. This give that cartridge bootrom access. You might be wondering how you'd hold down buttons while the shell is closed, and why you need a magnet. If you put a magnet in a specific spot on the 3DS, it will go into sleep mode. Using this, you can boot the NDS cartridge with the buttons held down while in sleep mode! Using a reflashable flashcard, you can boot B9SInstaller using the flashcard, and easily install it on your 3DS.
The 2DS doesn't need a magnet since a switch puts it to sleep instead of a magnet.

What does this mean?

  1. Any 3DS model on any firmware can be hacked with minimal effort
  2. You can unbrick any 3DS model from any type of brick.
    - Remember, you don't need a NAND backup for this. Just do a CTRTransfer.
    - This does not apply to MCU bricks.
  3. Even consoles with fried NAND, or even the NAND chip physically removed, can use this
This is incredibly impressive stuff, and will most likely be released soon! edit: now!

FAQ

Q: Can Nintendo patch this?
A: Nope! Not without a new hardware revision.

Q: My flashcard is blocked by my firmware! Can I still use this?
A: Yes! The flashcard blacklist is not enabled on the bootrom.

Q: Why can't this work with my flashcard?
A: The installation requires you to flash NTRBoot to the flashcard's nand. Most DS flashcards, such as the original R4, have a ROM, which is not flashable.

Q: Can I install NTRBoot on my flashcard without another 3DS system?
A: If you can run NDS roms on your 3DS with it, then yes. If it's blocked on your 3DS version, then you'll need another 3DS system to use it.

Q: Will my 3DS flashcard work?
A: No, only the NDSi flashcards listed above.

Q: Will any other flash cards work?
A: Only the ones listed in the OP. However keep in mind that flashcards such as the DSTT, Supercard DS2 and R4 SDHC Dualcore are planned to be supported in the future.

Q: I tried to do this with my cartridge and it didn't work?
A: It doesn't work with regular DS cards.

Q: Can I unbrick from a ____ brick?
A: Considering the card has access to the bootrom, yes! This can unbrick any brick (except MCU), unless you've taken a knife to the motherboard.

Q: Can I install B9S on the latest firmware with this?
A: Again, since the card has access to the bootrom, you can do this easily! Just plug in your flashcard, boot up using the magnet and button combination, and install.

Q: Does this work on the New Nintendo 2DS XL?
A: Yes!

I hope now that dstt is supported work for dstwo to be will be faster
We don't necessarily know this. The commands the card uses could still be very different. The R4 SDHC cards are also clones of the DSTT but we don't have support yet even though those have been being worked on for a really long time. Even though the hardware is similar there could be some significant differences in how the cards function.

Welp, I borked my DSTT.
I tried NTRBoot with my R4i gold, and it worked perfectly, from beginning to end. Dumped FW, flashed NTRBoot, tested booting into B9S, restored the card firmware, back to working as usual with no issues.
Tried it with my legit DSTT, made a backup successfully (supposedly) then went to flash it, and it got stuck at "reading - 99%" and just hung there. I let it sit for about 5 minutes, then gave up and hard shut it off.
Tried to use it to boot into SafeB9S, no good. Went back into the NTRBoot flasher, tried to restore backup, and again it stuck at 99%. Had to hard power off.
Just for shits and giggles, I tried to install NTRBoot again, and it did the same thing, stuck at 99%.
When put into a system booted to main menu, it freezes the 3DS, requires hard power off. (o3DSXL and n3DSXL both on B9S 1.2 and Luma 8.1.1)

Mine has this chipset (the SST39VF400A specifically) 0x80BF: http://www.metatech.com.hk/datasheet/sst/standard_mem_pdf/360-39LF-VFx00A-3-DS.pdf (29 blocks of 2048 bytes)

Maybe I'll try again if/when a new revision of NTRBoot flasher is released, but it sure looks like I killed the card. If anyone has any suggestions for things to try, I'm game. I won't miss the DSTT.

If anyone has a dumped FW for the DSTT, I'd like to give that a try, see if I can get it back to running condition and attempt the NDS flash method.

Edit: Fixed my booboo using Linfox's DsttFlashWriter and my AK2. It's possible to recover from a bad NTRBoot flash using that tool.

Did ntrboot_flasher even update to officially support it? Because if not I guess this teaches you a lesson about not just using random builds or building yourself unless you now how to debug and troubleshoot.

Yep, it officially did, thanks for your heartfelt concern.

And I guess I now a thing or two about debug and troubleshoot, because I used DsttFlashWriter.nds to restore a factory firmware to my DSTT, and it works properly as a flashcard again.
Now I can feel free to experiment some more without fear of ruining my useless old flashcard or inviting public critique for attempting to contribute.

I just wish there were more updates on DSTWO Support. Its like there is an invisible Person Mocking me for buying this cart when it launched at this point because Literally every other cart under the sun is being worked on or has finished and all you see for dstwo is just under planned carts. All im asking for is just for a simple progress update or two. Thats all.

From what I have heard they have the DSTwo working but the process is irreversible at the moment and given how much a DSTwo costs few people would be willing to effectively brick it permanently. Once they figure out how to restore the original firmware it will be supported.

There are at least 100+ posts on DSTT at this point. ;-; is this all this thread talks about anymore?

well, consider that the DSTT is the cheapest, and for the most part, most readily available in terms of people already owning one and access of buying one (from personal experience, everyone I know owned or owns a DSTT), I can see why there's a HUGE focus on it. I own one myself, I have 0 money at the moment to buy one of the supported carts, nor do I know anyone that has access to unbrick my 3DS, so i'm holding that "L" till my DSTT gets support.

I have two of them SO THIS WOULD BE AMAZING! I would be 100% willing to make one a permanent ntrboothax cart. Its just a shame ill probably never get my hands on a build for it X-x

EDIT: If Someone can find the one time flash version of it, please pm it to me as im pretty desperate at this point since i have multiple of them.

I decided to try the ak2i_ntrcardhax_flasher.nds method from my R4i, to write NTRBoot to the DSTT, since that program too is officially updated to support DSTT and some people reported success where NTRBoot Flasher failed.
Unfortunately I ran into the same problem as when I tried to use NTRBoot Flasher. It acknowledges the card, goes to write it, hangs at 99% Reading, and corrupts the card.
I recovered it once again with DSTTFlashWriter, and I guess I'm just gonna hold off on more experiments for now.

I do not recommend the dstt, it gives me error in 2 cards, the magnet does not work with this card.
I've been hearing a lot of problems about this card. It seems widespread.
10 bucks are still nothing compared to what you can do with it ^^
Perhaps the price increase was premature. :P

The problem with the DSTT and why the thread is flooded with it is that the chipsets vary so much, so what works for some of us doesn't work for others. I have 2 that just won't work, and it's due to the chipset.
