Nintendo has updated the Wii U firmware to 5.5.4

You thought it was dead, but the Nintendo Wii U lives on. Following an update that initially was just for European regions, the update is also supposedly to be made available in North American and Japan, according to patch notes. However, currently, Nintendo of America's site does not note any new firmware revisions, nor do we know if the update will actually come to non-EU systems. At this point, we have no idea what 5.5.4 changes, besides standard stability. The last time we saw an update for the Wii U was all the way back in September 2018, for version 5.5.3 which was yet another stability update. If you still value using your Wii U, you might want to wait on updating, to see what this changes in terms of homebrew.

  • Version number: 5.5.4
  • Release date: June 24th 2019 (North America) / June 25th 2019 (Europe, Japan)
  • Regions: Europe / North America / Japan
  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience

The following titles were updated: VersionData, and Wii U Menu.

Total titles sizes: 102482052

SOAP TitleHash: 0B1C2469FA99869CFFD6642AD035D006

It seems surprising, but the PS3 has also gotten updates as recently as earlier this year. And those updates actually blocked homebrew.
(off topic)

The PS3 gets updated mainly to change the bluray movie encryption keys - being one of the very few players where they're periodically changed (well, it's also one of the few players to get hacked :P), they definitely took their time to patch the 4.82 browser exploit and haven't solved the still open "hybrid firmware" yet :)

If you update with CBHC installed, you will have to reinstall CBHC. You don't have to remove CBHC before the update. Haxchi is unaffected by the update.
I am asking because back then people said that if you were on 5.5.1 and you updated to 5.5.2 with either regular haxchi or cbhc installed, you would brick

I have 2 Wii U, one of them to my surprise autoupdated this morning and I had to reinstall CBHC. (First uninstalled (not needed?), then installed again).

The other is protected against updates, I'll hold on updating that for a few days.
(The one that autoupdated is defective, it has a broken drive - so I paid about €20 and I use it for experimenting a bit)

So, this seems to be a harmless update, but I guess some people having bought a hacked Wii U lately on ebay or whatever, will find their console "not working properly" after the autoupdate, maybe reformat the console, and brick.

I haven't seen this update yet. I live in Sweden. Even my stock console can't see the update. I've never blocked updates on my consoles, and I'm not using VPN. But it would seem as this update doesn't affect all, or it simply hasn't hit Sweden yet.

Have you checked download manager?
Do you have blocked the updates by DNS ?

Try to go to Settings\System Update, and force the update manually and see if it starts updating.

See if you can access the eshop - that's when mine prompted the update.

Yeah, I haven't blocked anything. And E-shop works fine.

It's no big deal to not update, I just figured I'd let everyone know that some consoles didn't recieve it (yet).

You must have Nintendo servers blocked by DNS or your console is USA region.
If you go to System Settings \ System Update and click on update, it does nothing??
Are you sure you are on 5.5.3E ?

I have 2. Both WUP-010(EUR). One running Haxchi, one stock. None of them can get the update to this date. And no blocking whatsoever.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
