Homebrew N3ds wont boot any homebrew apps on 11.3 soundhax (soft modded)

So me and my friend soft modded his N3ds (just gave it the homebrew launcher) on 11.3-36U using soundhax. But the problem is none of the apps would work. We tried many apps including a bunch of retroarch apps (froze on red screen), menuhax installer (froze on green screen), qtrboom (froze on red screen), and blarg snes ( booted but when launching a game froze). We tried them all many times and even formated the sd and used h2wtest to check for errors (had none). How would we make it so the apps would work? Does he have to get a9lh to make them work on 11.3? Please help.

No we just gave it the hbl not a9lh.

And made sure to put the other app in and rename it and put the starter kit in and the mx4 file.

Most emulators don't work without A9LH.

I'm not sure why that happens. Some Retroarch emulators can run using only the HBL, but they never run as fast as installing it as a CIA on Luma3DS + A9LH.

Ok Ill tell him to get luma. The only reason he didnt want to get it was because he is very nervous and thinks he will brick eventhough I told him there's like no chance of bricking.
