Kojima Productions launches new film and television department in Los Angeles

maxresdefault.jpg

Hideo Kojima's production studio announced today it will be opening up a new division in Los Angeles focused on film, television, and "other forms of entertainment." The new division will be headed by Riley Russell, former Chief Legal Officer at Sony Interactive Entertainment. "The new division will be tasked with working with creative and talented professionals in television, music and film, as well as the more familiar games industry," said Russell in a press release sent to GBAtemp. "The team has as its charter, the goal of expanding the reach and awareness of the properties now under development at Kojima Productions, and to make them even more a part of our popular culture."

The move should not be surprising to fans of Kojima's work, who has long shown a clear passion for American film and television in his work, and is renowned for helping to revolutionize cinematics in games with his Metal Gear Solid series. His latest project, Death Stranding, also brought in a number of high-profile Hollywood talent, including Norman Reedus, Guillermo del Toro, Mads Mikkelsen, and Lindsay Wagner.

As of now, this new division has no announced projects, and it is unclear what role Kojima himself will be taking.

All very unfunny and bad gameplay jokes aside, I'm kind of surprised this hadn't come up earlier. He said recently that the pandemic made him reflect on his creative process, and I wonder how that influenced this opening.

Amazed it took Kojima this long lol

but also really hope he still does games

Not to mention
The new division will be headed by Riley Russell
and we don't know how Kojima will play a part in this department, so only time will tell. Highly doubt he'd suddenly leave games, considering how much he's gotten to use it alongside with cutscenes.

His latest project, Death Stranding, also brought in a number of high-profile Hollywood talent, including Norman Reedus, Guillermo del Toro, Mads Mikkelsen, and Lindsay Wagner.
Also given a role in Death Stranding was long time Mikkelsen colaborator, Nic Winding Refn, who also had Kojima cameo in his Amazon series, "Too Old to Die Young".

Interesting news to me, as a Refn fan. I wonder if Kojima's studio will somehow be involved in Refn's supposed remake/reboot of Maniac Cop.

I'm not a wild fan of Kojima's, but I always got the impression the guy would rather be making movies than video games. Good for him, I guess. Honestly surprised it took this long for him to make this move.

Death stranding was pretentious, mediocre and overzealous. Kojima has not done a good MGS since MGS 3 and even that was a bit of a stretch. Let's be honest he needs to open a movie studio to capitalise on the MGS name.

Just my opinion. Americans and lefties who like to insult others for opinions they don't share, just stay away.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds

It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
