John Romero is working on a new IP for a major publisher

John Romero, co-founder of id Software and designer on many classic titles such as Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein, has announced he will be working on a new IP with a major publisher. After announcing a new hiring initiative, the Romero Games homepage now proudly proclaims "It’s a new dawn for Romero Games. We are 100% focused on first-person shooters, the foundation that built our careers, our studio and a genre. Our current project is an all-new FPS with an original, new IP. Romero Games is working with a major publisher using state-of-the-art technology – Unreal Engine 5."

While few details have emerged - an FAQ on the website states that "it’s way too early" to share more info - the move is significant as it will be Romero's first project in some time working with new technology, for a major publisher, and (presumably) with a decent budget. All of his recent games have either been self-published or independently published, and have mostly not been in the genre he's most associated with. His last FPS game was Sigil, a 2019 mod of the original Doom, built using community-created modding tools to create original levels. (While originally published independently, Sigil was eventually picked up by Bethesda and released as an update for the console ports of Doom.)

Some other upcoming projects for Romero include Doom Guy: Life in First Person, his autobiography expected to release January 10, 2023, and Sigil 2, a mod of Doom II similar to the original Sigil.

That was Warren Spector. Jon Romero is special thanks https://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/deus-ex/credits . ION Storm was just the dev house with Deus Ex being done by the Austin branch where Dallas was Romero's home base as it were, though I am sure many that did the deed would say it was thanks in no small part to the leeway afforded rather than a conventional pub breathing down necks.
The story goes - as told by Spector - that Romero called Spector up just when he was about to sign a different deal, and when that didn't get Spector on board Romero drove 200 miles to turn him around and convinced him to go with Ion Storm to make Troubleshooter:

Only reason why I forgave him the gutting of Revenant :)

Romero will always be infamous even if he makes another good game.
What? No he won't. People are coming around to appreciate some parts of Daikatana and even those who aren't don't care. The reality is the advertisement campaign is older than most people who use the term "Boomer Shooter," so I think it'll be fine.

Unless you only know him for that game, and remember the ad, sure.

The John duology will never happen again. Perfect match between game designer and programmer.
