I had so much hope for arms being great for competitive play, but playing and watching ranked matches is dull and boring. A good competitive game is fun to watch, that's how big esports games gets its money by having a large audience. So if a game isnt fun to watch then there wont be as much companies that will sponsor the tournaments because the viewer turn out would be so small. It can still be a niche competitive game but I doubt it'd be relevant for long. Competitive smash, mortal kombat, tekken, street fighter, splatoon, overwatch are fun competitive games to watch but the average competitive arms battle is so boring to watch as the majority of the battle is the players dodging left and right or just spamming left hook and right hook repeatedly or the grab spamming... like theres a lot of things mechanically that are bad about arms too like how you arent able to effectively hit the players when theyre dodging a lot, you are unable to hit them because of how the automatic camera doesnt allow you to punch where theyll be only where they were at the moment you let the punch out so if they spam dodge theres not much you can do, basically you are able to read your opponent but you cant punish them for doing anything because of the way the camera and attacks work. Also who thought it was a good idea to make all charged elemental attacks do the elemental status effect 100% of the time!? It shouldve been about 40% effectiveness when charged and then if you charge it for longer the percentage of the status inflicting should go up. And then again, another problem with the camera is that at times its too slow, a person could dodge to the left and I already knew where they were going but there was nothing you are able to do about it because the camera isnt fast enough to turn to their direction to be able to punch and stop their grab. Its still fun casually when playing locally by all means but I'm really sad to see that it really didn't turn out to be all that great as I hope it would be initially.
