OP
I haven't followed the 3DS and its scene, so I wanted to know whether it is worth it to buy one now? Is Nintendo planning on producing a successor anytime soon? Or is the Nintendo Switch considered the successor? When do you think Nintendo will remove support for the 3DS (Shut online gaming down)?

Also, are there any different hardware specifications between the different types of 3DS (3DS XL, 2DS, 2DS XL, etc...)? Or any extra features that some games might need?

As long as people still keep buying 3DS games, Nintendo will keep selling 3DS consoles. Will probably see some more custom designs before production is stopped, and one last surprise mini version or something knowing Nintendo.

i think the op's question is more of a "will/are new games being developed for the 3ds" . . . and the answer is yes they are and only nintendo knows when they will stop
Is Nintendo planning on producing a successor anytime soon?
not that they have announced
Or is the Nintendo Switch considered the successor?
they say its not ( . . . but dident they start off saying that it "wont replace the wiiu" as well)

when poeple stop buying them (the games)

n3dsxl n3ds and n2ds (or "new" 3ds/2ds if you will) have better processers and more controls than non-n (often referred to as o3ds or old 3ds) . . . and obviously the xl versions have larger screens

Or any extra features that some games might need?
some games (like 8 in total) only boot on a n3ds/n2ds and there are about twice as many games that either need the extra controls of the new models (or a accessory to add the second analog stick and second set of shoulders if using an o3ds/o2ds)

Not much, unless we get a persona q 2.We won't know what the successor will be untill we get 8th gen Pokemon confirmed on either the switch or the rumored 3ds successor.

Nintedo are out of ideas what are they going to do after the switch.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

They haven't said if the switch is the successor on not but the 3ds isn't strong enough for another graphical update for a new pokemon game so theres no option but to put it on the switch regardless if theres going to be a successor or not. 3ds isn't getting more pokemon games so it looks like it doesn't have alot of life left. The ds died pretty much after pokemon was on the 3ds and a year after that the ds wifi got shut down the 3ds death is closer then you think.
