So... I have knights in the nightmare preordered, shipped to me tomorrow. I don't see a dump anywhere, so I'd thought I'd do a dump. However, I do not know how to make this an official release, Or is it only for certain popular producers?

you have to give the rom to a dumper, say Caravan,Xenophobia etc.,take a look at some nfos to see which group dumped it,there should be a contact info, but if they already dumped that rom,it would be useless to give it

DS is a bit different in some ways from the rest of the scene but in general:
Game card is found and dumped (it is not always done and the tools we have a fairly reliable but I say check twice).
Newly made rom is packaged (rar format + nfo (I am sure you have seen a release before), boxart optional but appreciated, not sure where "file_id.diz" stands these days but do one as well).
Rom is uploaded to FTP site and pre bot is informed (when you see announcements in IRC or on one of the "automatic" sections of related sites this is generally what is telling you).
FTP spreads to other FTP sites and then down to usenet/torrent/file hosting sites/other p2p/websites/irc and whatever else is out there.

Alas to do that you have to be part of the scene to pull that off.
However (and this is where it becomes different) if you somehow get your release out there it may well be picked up and packaged as an independent release (the ind-???? releases) and then get a general release. This is almost unique to the GBA and DS though (most other parts of the scene including other console games will nuke you if you do that).

As a rule most sites only report on scene releases but as "ind" exists that is the main way for things to appear from outside the scene.

I second the second post's advice.

Check out the .nfo on any Xenophobia release for their email address and let them know where you stand as far as having the game, having it dumped, etc. and see if they already have the means to do their own official release. Atlus games are always a crapshoot if only because of how long it could take to ship to certain areas and it took Xeno about a week and a half to do the last Atlus game Steal Princess.

They might be more than interested to get the dump of this game as early and easy as possible.

Honestly, I just hope the guys at the top are taking their time with Atlus releases out of respect. Atlus runs its game at such a low quantity that if you just wait a week or two, they will have sold all the copies they wanted to sell, and dropping the Rom won't really affect Atlus's bottom line.

edit: not that anyone who is waiting for the rom is going to run out and buy it because they are impatient. still, I like to see Atlus games get a slower turnaround..

I think it's a weird cross hatch that Atlus uses to their advantage. Yes, Homebrew and hacking on the DS is known by the video game crowd, but the DS install base is mainly the mainstream.

Atlus takes that mainstream and focuses on a very specific group: Anime and RPG fans. With this group, you have a new subset: anime fans love to have a physical product. I can't tell you how many anime series I bought even though I've already seen the show fansubbed online. The soundtracks and the artbooks and mini-posters do work in getting that group's attention, and you have to figure a CD costs pennies to print.

Yes, Atlus is in a niche, but I think when they are already limiting releases to 10,000 copies like Steal Princess, you have a game that's more likely to sell out and only be able to be played by some on a flashcart than Atlus not selling enough copies.
