A GameCube and Gameboy Player can be purchased for.. $20 or $30 maybe.

Add in one of these controllers, for under $10, and you're pretty much set.

Granted it's not HD and doesn't have an HDMI port, but the quality is very good, and you get Gameboy Advance support.

Amazon has a few composite HDMI upscalers for around $20.

I was about to post that if you want to play original gameboy carts on TV, best is a Super GameBoy xD
I'd argue that Game Boy Player is slightly better. No Super Game Boy borders or palettes, but you can run it through component and it plays GBC/GBA games as well. Either way, they're both far cheaper and arguably better choices than a modded Game Boy.
