The GIMP version 2.8 finally brings single-window mode to the public.

Posting it here 'cause I know some people on the 'temp are into image manipulation stuff, and big improvements in the UI of a free tool is always good in my book. This is one less thing people can claim is bad about GIMP, finally. XD Though you've always been able to just maximize the main window and drag the toolbars into the appropriate place, the different windows would change their highlighting depending on the focus which was visually disturbing, and you'd need to mess with the main window more when moving between projects.

It was so annoying because you couldn't minimize the Toolbox or Layers, Channels etc windows xD. This solution does look very promising. If we upgrade, will it prevent use of plugins such as GAP for 2.6?

I used gimp for a little while and the most annoying thing were those separate windows. I only used it on XP, but they always managed to get out of focus, get behind other screens or simply "disappear" (not closing them, mind you). It actually amazes me that it took them this long to make a function that merges all those separate windows into one big window.. That said however, IIRC gimp was actually made for linux in the first place...

Every time I'd maximize my GIMP window, the primary toolbar would end up underneath the main window for some reason. It got really old. I'm so glad single-window mode is available now. I just wish I didn't have to wait a week for the Windows build. :|

The multi window GIMP I used was cluttered and confusing, but I got used to it

I always wanted everything to be on a single window, I just wished it came true sooner

I've got it right now. Make sure you're not viewing a cached version of the page. Also go to the Windows menu to enable single-window mode.
I was meaning in the past tense. I subscribe to the GIMP.org RSS feed, and it took almost a week (really it was 4 days, but for something so anticipated like this, it felt like a week) from 2.8's launch for the Windows build to go up. Probably because they're still letting a 3rd party handle that instead of just building it in-house, so to speak.

I might have to have a look as I am being the dirty peasant with only one monitor (well a monitor and a projector going to my ceiling) right now (upgraded graphics card and forgot to check if DVI meant DVI D or not). Hopefully it will also help sort the windows priorities issues with GIMP that have long annoyed me.

On the other hand I am probably going to drop back down (was not paying attention and playing with ninite) for a while as I was just getting the hang of the Resynthesizer.

I need a photoshop alternative for a day (four days ago) and I got gimp and I didn't like it Because the windows were everywhere. This makes it a hell lot better

This looks nice! I don't edit images that much, so I use the GIMP for it because it's free and offers some features simple editors like paint don't have. I didn't mind multiple windows, but the option for a single window is always nice.

Not bad, a useful update for the free software. Still won't make me change my Adobe Design Standard for graphics, publishing and photo editing. Good for pretty much anyone who doesn't need the commercial products :)

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space

@rqkaiju2, Physical media is a great source for archiving your data, none of that cloud storage shiz.
