well, gunna have to keep waiting i guess.
G3DS promised support up to 6.2(eventually), still waiting
im stuck on 5.0.1 or 5.0.0.1u or something like that
to be honest, pokemons the first game in 6 months that even caught my eye; and with
GTAV and, Pikmen 3 and a few other titles (and ps4 comming to me in what now, 3 weeks? 4 weeks?) im in no rush.
I just wish they would say "yes, working on it"

cuz if they arent, ill sell it.
"ITS THE NOT KNOWING THAT KILLZ MEH!"
lol, thanks for the replies
good news for the rest of you tho i guess... nothing spectacular if you really sit back and look @ it.
So how exactly does one go about finding a compatable 3DS nowadays, just go to walmart, ask for the one in the very back and hope its good? Want to get a black XL. Can the guts of a regular 3DS be swapped for an XL? What about system transfer? Will a higher fw transfered to a lower fw have high or low? Or is there a website you can shop for low fw 3DS? How about bundles? any guaranteed to come with low fw?
I'd say your only absolute guarantee would be to buy an animal crossing or pikachu edition. My black XL came with 5.1, so I wouldn't bet on that. Buying one any other way is going to be a gamble.
Im on fw 6.2 . Does that mean that im out of luck of ever using gateway and should just update the fw to the latest version?
I have a question to the knowledgeable people around here. This didnt get answered in a different thread that got burried, and I see this as a fit time to ask. I have a launch day 3DS. If I were to format the system, would it revert to its original out of factory firmware, or no? I was told the SD encrypto key changes if I were to do a system format, which is understandable. If I were to do a NAND dump of the 3DS now (its on 6.3), and reset and potentially go back to stock, and get a game with 4.X, could I somehow use a hypothetical program (since kernal access is available, im also not saying it would be easy either, im just asking) to change the SD encryption key on the 4.X to my original NAND's (which could potentially be readable since its from the same hardware?) key? Also, would anyone think that I could use the 6.3 NAND dump to be used in the Gateway's NAND emulation? There isnt a whole lot know how it works I guess, but that would be pretty sweet if you could.
Im not saying this would be easy, and I know we dont have any extensive homebrew libraries or anything like to make mentioned hypothetical tool or possibly other needed tools. This is just a mini wall of text question(s) that I would like to hear people respond to.
Without getting to tedious, the answer to all your questions is no. Even if you format your 3DS it will still retain it's 6.3 firmware.
Formating your 3DS wont revert any firmware update, so, for now you cant do anything but wait.

If you're really that OCD about what color your Gateway enabled XL is, why not just buy a black skin for it? Also, I use a grip for mine, so the back isn't even an issue.EXACT same problem here. As much as I really want the Gateway, I also want my XL to be black and I don't want to have to risk a complicated shell swap. All of the black/black XL's are running 5.1. so I guess I'll try holding out for a Gateway Exploit for that version which I don't think is likely.
