Well, the 4th dimension is time (duh), the 5th dimension is nacho cheese (yum), the 6th dimension is virgin tears (tons of that here), and the 7th dimension is grape Kool-Aid.
If Nintendo doesn't make a grape Kool-Aid console (which would be fine by me, actually. Don't really like the stuff) then I'm going to blow up their phones. With grapes. And virgin tears. Good thing I've recently been restocked, thought I had made a bad investment.

It would be nice if they would allow you to run 'retail' carts in the gateway mode for a few good reasons.

1. The version spoof.....this way you could run original carts that need higher than 4.5.
2. Region spoof.....If you want to go to the effort to import a game you can run official carts from other regions.

They have no economic reason to make Gateway Mode run retail carts with region unlock / FW spoof -- that's potential sales lost by people who'd just download their installer and use it on their already-owned DS flashcart. More than certain they could've easily designed it to work with retail carts if they'd wanted to.

And if they refused to make it work with 5.x or 6.2 firmware, that too would affect potential sales. Just saying. Not saying they'd refuse to, just something to think about.

I honestly do doubt they'll be able to find another kernel exploit to load ROMs that'll work post-4.5 [on their own] -- their current front is more along the lines of, we can't necessarily do it, but publicly saying that we can't/won't will probably affect sales quite a bit. Hence "no timeframe".

I'm not talking about games that come with updates, but those who accidentally updated the actual system prior to the announcement. We know the exploit works up to 6.2 but not past it. They said it would probably be months before it can be done, but we can't rule it out, it would not be fair to deny potential customers.

I have my doubts if they will find an exploit beyond 4.5. We know their DS overflow works up to 6.2 so that means they can launch something but the problem is they obviously haven't found a 'hole' to give them kernel level access since 4.5. I am sure they want to as that would give them potentially a much larger user base. Their are still some 4.5 units to bad had at retail currently but that won't last much longer and once they dry up their potential market shrinks considerable. If they could get up to 6.2 working then it would likely be another 6 months before 'workable' retail units dry up. I just wish that had announced immediately (in june) that it wasn't going to work past 4.5 so more people would have stayed put. I updated my XL in April when I bought it as I had to go on eshop after my transfer and redownload my 'full' purchases. Still I was so worried I would get shut out of the fun I went and secured a non-XL to use for gateway use.....keeping my XL on 5.1 with the hope they will get it working but I have my doubts, even though the gateway team has proven credible to the point.

All I can do is wait really. I'm not going to fork out more money for a 4.5 3DS XL.

I don't blame you really....systems are not dirt cheap and you could buy 5 or 6 games for what it would cost you. I lucked out and found a new unopened (essentiall launch v1.0) 3DS on craigs list for $120. I kind of find things I liked about both the XL and the non-XL (one that the small unit is just more compact and better for the road). I also still had my nyko battery, circle pad pro, and cases from my original launch 3DS (that I sold after buying the XL) so I figured what the heck. Even though I am not a huge fan of the effect I find the 3D might be a little better on the smaller unit just because the screen is so big on the XL it is hard to keep the whole thing in focus when the 3D is on.....or maybe it is just me and I am getting old and blind!

Eh, maybe :P I like the XL due to being able to actually read the text in Ocarina of Time or Tales of the Abyss. I'm just going to wait, but what irks me is how people are going around telling everyone "hey, I have a 4.5 3DS and you don't, hahahahaha). Not saying you aren't (and I'm glad) but people really need to stop bragging.

True stuff looks pretty small on the non-XL even with my glasses on....lol. I don't know if you played cave story 3D, which is a really nice adaption of that game on 3DS but the sprites are so damned tiny you almost need a magnifying lens to see it on the normal 3DS....I really hope they get gateway working on 5.x/6.x as I would like to use my XL with it, but then I will have to decide which system to keep as the gateway machine as eventually I plan to use one for gateway and one for official use. I figure at some point Nintendo will go to a unified account system and do more with wii_u/3ds cross play or connectivity so that is why eventually I want one of these for OFW use.

I belive you have to update it to 4.1 - 4.5 using a retail game. If you are in europe you could buy AC-NL game since it have 4.5 update in europe version and the game don't work in gateway cart. (I know this just by reading this forum, I don't even have the gateway or a prior 4.5 3DS...)

My 3ds is on v 2.2.1 - does anyone know if it will work on that or is there a way just to update to 4.5?

Cheers guys
Arnold0 is correct. You can update your 3DS to a compatible firmware by using the update built into every 3DS game. I hear it's possible to update with ROMs themselves, but it's not recommended.

But he can't do that (updating with roms), because his 3DS is less than 4.1 so gateway wont work. the only option is retail game here I think.
