Epic releases Unreal Engine 5

Screenshot_13-2060x1158.png

Epic Games first debuted its "next-generation" engine for video games two years ago, further teasing the new technology with tech demos, and now it's time for the newest Unreal Engine to release to the public. Unreal Engine 5 is now available to download, introducing the new technology for game developers. They also released a sample of their The Matrix Awakens tech demo and a multiplayer shooter game called Lyra for creators to learn and understand how Unreal Engine 5 works in a "hands-on way".

With this release, we aim to empower both large and small teams to really push the boundaries of what’s possible, visually and interactively. UE5 will enable you to realize next-generation real-time 3D content and experiences with greater freedom, fidelity, and flexibility than ever before.

Currently, Fortnite is utilizing Unreal Engine 5, while CD Projekt Red has announced that the next The Witcher game will be made using UE5, and a new Tomb Raider game will also be built using it. The new features of this engine include Lumen, a dynamic global illumination technology that works in real-time, and Nanite, which can handle high-fidelity geometric detail. There are also new animation, shadow mapping, and audio tools, explained further in-depth in the official release notes

ok-ish engine, shitty company. And now they not only buy exclusives for their """platform""" but also games for their engine, facepalm.
Destroying the diversity (the good kind of diversity) and unique features some in-house engines bring to their games, but hey the companies are getting the greens so whatever. Also less work to the devs so maybe a win? in the short term...

Same noisy minority with zero understaning of engine tech once again hating on one of the best engine out there just because it's from Epic. Why? Because they can't get a few games day one on Steam.
Digital Foundry, amongst others, expressing concern over the engine hardly makes for EGS whinging.... like I think I've seen on here, it'll be good for making rocks , but eg dense foliage is a different matter altogether - the engine just isn't suited to that (apparently! I'll admit I have little more than zero knowledge myself)
Guess we'll see if it's up to snuff when we have a look at the next Witcher, but based on comments from types in the know, people have good reason to be skeptical, and the samey look you get from pretty much every UE4 game in existence doesn't help matters.

quick reminder that after UE4 came out games started using more scripted cutscenes and relied on advanced physics far less... just sayin

that oot that uses ue5 is just insane. maybe one day, Nintendo will do something like that. lol
The time Nintendo will be able to do something of that quality of what UE5 can do, chances are UE9 will be out by then.

You do not rely on Nintendo for the latest and greatest in graphics, that is not the foremost priority in any of their game development.

I was going to put an lol at the end of that post, since I figured it would never happen.

Plain hate on any Epic product related posts from same noisy minority is just enough indication to think the otherwise.

Every new engine base on previous iteration but each time with improved and updated codes and a few major core features. Being most used engine out there doesn't mean it's bad because some people tired of seeing similar post effects which is purely up to devs to deep dive into source code and modify whatever part of engine they please.

There is a long way ahead of the engine to improve the parts it lacks. It's literally 5.0.0 version. Trashing it in its first reveal just because it shows off billions of triangles on rocks but not foliage is just childish. It wasn't even possible to see such dense polygonal scenes running in realtime in any game engine up until now. So it is progress and helps to push technical boundaries further for all, it's a marathon not a sprint.

Agreed ....mostly! But you're calling DF childish (?!) when the concern wasn't the difference between rocks and foliage, but more the way engine is set up for delivering the portrayal of how foliage naturally acts when eg, blown about in the wind, stood on, etc - the tech isn't really catered to these kind of details according to them, and Digital Foundry aren't a bunch of spotty teenage Steam fanboys you know, they know what they're talking about

Still, as you say, this is the initial release, I'm sure DF themselves are hoping their concerns are unfounded as well.

Just got finished watching the whole Epic Games keynote this morning, and I will say I'm fairly impressed by the features their engine offers. I see why CDPR is ditching the RedEngine for UR Engine 5 for the Witcher 4 development cycle.

People hate on the engine because games made with it are known for performance issues on hardware that's completely capable of running the games. That's more on the developers than the engine, but I'm sure there's some stuff Epic could do to make tweaking the games for console easier.

Well, from what I've heard from my parents, he had a seizure last night, perhaps an epileptic episode, fucking died, had a near death experience, my dad called the paramedics, they showed up, took him to the hospital, and he woke up covered in tubes, and started complaining.
