Maybe I just don't understand the article (please explain it if I'm missing some key point), but it seems to me like games won't change at all except that you can skip "farming" if you want to pay money. Farming, while annoying, has been a necessity in a larger percentage of games for decades. I don't see how normal users miss out on anything.

Well it really depends on the game. Not many EA games have "farming".

As previously mentioned, I think Mass Effect 3 and Dead Space 3 are good examples of "games with microtransactions". And those games are just fine with microtransactions.

Greedy bastards!

Yes, because how dare they force you to buy the Microtransactions! How dare they force you to pay to play the game after you've already bought it. How dare they take money from your credit ca...oh, wait... they aren't.

Just don't buy anything, then all of a sudden they're not greedy.

Oh, greed... How much I despise you -_-

With the rising cost of games, having micro transactions might be an effective way to keep the actual retail cost of the games down a bit. Unless you want to see games in the 80 dollar price range when the costs of making a game are pushing the 100 million dollar mark, I wouldn't be complaining about micro transactions that are generally pretty optional.

Well the price of game development is rising but so is the userbase.

Development costs also differ from game to game and not to mention the prevalence of indie games means you can make a game for little money and a lot of effort for big success. I mean Braid was made off one guy's years of savings and it got huge. Now he's able to make another game (The Witness). Or even Minecraft. I'm no fan of it but it made Mojang literally millions.

I can't remember the last time I bought an EA game. In any case so long as they don't build the game so microtransactions are needed to beat a it I'm ok with people blowing their money on these things.

I just realized that I don't know any games EA actually made that aren't sport games so unless they change you money in those games I don't see a problem.
The sims, simcity, mass effect, battlefield, need for speed, dragon age, command and conquer, star wars: the old republic, dead space, burnout. They also own popcap games such as plants vs zombies. So yeah, no games there that anybody's actually heard of or familiar with...

The most I heard of any of them is I saw them in cataloges or on the shelf in the shops otherwise I haven't and don't plan to play any of those games, the only western games I have ever played are just indie titles and Halo.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
