Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King 3DS port releases January 20th

The 3DS version of Dragon Quest VIII will be hitting stores on January 20, 2017, as revealed by a Nintendo Press Release. New features include two extra recruitable characters, more side quests, a alternative ending, speeding up battles, and quick-saving. The game will also retain voice acting from the original PS2 release.

As players dive into the rich story of DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, whether they’re visiting for the first time or coming back to relive the adventure all over again, they can enjoy full voice acting in all plot-important cutscenes, and new story content that will provide more back story about The Hero and the villainous Dhoulmagus. Further additions include additional quests to complete and dungeons to explore, and even a new alternative ending.

Returning heroes may also find that elements of DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King have been streamlined for this hand-held outing. The new Quick-Save function allows players to save and exit the game at any time. And for warriors in a hurry, battling foes is also much faster with the introduction of the “Speed Up” feature, allowing heroes to cut their way through each encounter with much greater haste.

Those who wish to capture mementos of their quest to restore peace to the land will now find it’s easier than ever before, as at any time outside of battles and cutscenes players can pause the action and take a photo of their adventure thus far. These photos can be customized in a variety of different ways, including allowing The Hero and his companions to perform special poses, adding stickers and filters, or putting a frame around the image to add a personal touch to their memory. Once the player meets Cameron Obscura in Port Prospect they’ll also be able to unlock Cameron’s Codex, where they’ll be rewarded for taking pictures of certain subjects, monsters and situations.

I thought midi sound was better than recorded sound?

Also, why is it only 2D?

Why would MIDI ever be better than the real thing? Sure, the sound font can sound really realistic but it doesn't change that it's really hard to sequence MIDI to sound natural.

Because a recording has a bunch of noise, and likely also artifacts from encoding

Hopefully somebody can make a patch to add back in the orchestrated soundtrack. Besides that it'll be a solid release. Looks like despite their mixed performance Square Enix and Nintendo are still intent on making all the Dragon Quest games in the west readily available. Considering how good but underappreciated these games are outside of Japan I'm all for it.

Tell me more! What makes it a downgrade from the PS2 version? If it's much better there, I'll play the PS2 version.

And what kind of lag is in VII? I didn't notice, but I'm playing on an N3DS, so maybe that's why.

The PS2 version is just the better overall looking game due to the PS2's power compared to 3DS. The 3DS version is really good still and has bonus weapons and dungeons.

So the original Japanese 3DS version of VII runs perfect on O3DS where there is no lag during monster encounters or using the shop, its very fluid. The English version is very slow compared to the Japanese version on O3DS and lags when you encounter 4+ monsters in an encounter. I played and beaten the Japanese version before the English version even came out and as I play through the English version i noticed it. Also the menu's in the English version have been changed where they removed things like weapon and armor images from the shops and your bag. I think you can only see image items in the characters inventory on the English version.

MOTHER OF GOD!
what next that iso site getting the roms straight from Nintendo?
GBAtemp is a huge site, and we cover a lot of gaming news. T-hug, the editor of GBAtemp, has gotten a lot of publishers and developers to recognize that, and the magazine staff is regularly in contact with game companies for news and review codes.

Please please please give us the option to turn off the damn voice acting, SE!
I quite like the voice acting, it's nice n cheesy! But if they sat down and decided to forego the orchestrated music in favour of the voice acting to save space, well they made the wrong decision there! DQVIII is easily one of my fave JRPGs of all time, and the music (in the PS2 version) was a particular highlight.
Didn't know the music was removed until reading through this thread actually - bit gutted, but let's see how the midi track does before grabbing the pitchforks (might have to acquire the Jap version and test!)
