Alright, let's see if all that praise was justified :). Check my Github, there is a new commit for a SD formatter feature (included in the experimental submenu). Still needs work, and if it works at once, I'll be as surprised as you (although it should) ;). It can't break your SD card, but it may break the MBR, in which case you'll need to properly format it again (no biggie). It will also delete everything on the SD, obviously, but you can use the SD unmount feature to switch SDs.

Also, this is not one step. You need to format, then restore the EmuNAND, and you need to have a NAND backup on your SD. At a closer look, the requirement of having to have a EmuNAND on your SD card (which is freshly formatted then) will make things complicated and force you to use a PC, nonetheless. I think I'll later add direct setup from SysNAND, but for now I'm mainly interested if it works at all.
Shouldn't be too hard with the FatFS stuff to directly write from the NAND to the SD card should it?

It is not, basically everything for that is already in the code. Anyways, going to sleep now. I'll fix any bugs tomorrow!

Ok so I had a question... Will you be using GWs format for emuNAND? (Basically the header you create) or redNAND format or what? Just curious

Stuck in a new SD card (16GB)
Selected Experimental Options
Choose "Format SD for EmuNAND"
Left-Right-Down-Up-A....

Says:
EmuNAND is not available
Format SD for EmuNAND: Failed!

(Also, same results if I choose Format SD / no EmuNAND)

I'm I thinking wrong about this, or should this have worked?
I mean, if I would have already had to have an emuPartition created....

Either way, I'll create a emuNAND on Gateway then see if this will format the partition, as maybe that's the test you wanted for now?

I believe you'll need to use the emuNAND tool to extract a working emuNAND until he adds full support for making an emuNAND from the sysNAND... Since it's experimental it requires some not so easy stuff as all of its features aren't fully finished, good luck

EDIT: https://gbatemp.net/threads/formatting-a-sd-card-for-emunand-without-gw-software.404695/ just found this

No worries, I have lots of emuNAND backups to play with. :)

I tried using MiniTool Partition and MiniAide Fat32 Formatter and leaving 2Gb unallocated in front of the FAT32 partition.
I could write files to it, see them on the PC no problem - but the 3DS would not acknowledge the SD card at all.
I tried this a few times, just to be sure, but no joy.

I then swapped back in my working SD card, booted to Decrypt9, selected Experimental Options, pressed Select to swap out my SD card for the new one I made above but the 3DS just hung when I pressed "B"

Then I deleted the partitions, re-created a single FAT32, copied my launcher and it worked fine.
Then I re-created a emuNAND partition on my Gateway and it works fine.

There must be some other step involved here.

GW type EmuNAND. RedNAND shouldn't be used anymore, I think. GW type EmuNAND is also actually easier to access (=> more CFWs support it).

@Smyers75 thanks a ton for testing! Well, I just took another look over my code, and it's completely clear this can not work (now, it looked perfectly fine last night) :). There is something (actually two things) you cou could help me with, though...
  1. That SD card you formatted with Partition Wizard, could you give me the MBR of that to have a look at? To extract the MBR from the SD card use HxD. Start HxD as admin -> Extras -> Open Drive. Here, select the physical drive of your SD card. Copy the first 512 (0x200) byte from that to a new file and post that here. No private data in there, but if you should have a bad feeling about this you could also send it in a PM.
  2. For your failed attempt, can you remember if the size that was displayed for the SD card was correct? Also, did it say it worked or did you get an error message?
If you don't have the SD for 1. anymore, no need to create it again. Further testing is much more helpful!

Using a Gateway formatted card, I get 14161 MiB before I try to format it with Decrypt9.
After it fails it says 17532186044415 MiB

One other thing to consider.
AFAIK - If the emuPartition doesn't have the GATEWAYNAND signature, tools like emuNANDTool will not see it

Here are some sample to look at:

Non-Working Mini-Tool Partition Wizard - 3DS doesn't see the SD card inserted
(The SD card was previously formatted and working on Gateway as emuNAND card.)

Follow-Up and some good progress just before I go to sleep!

Using MiniTool Partition, if I create a new SD card with 2GB free space and the balance as a FAT32 Partition, then cut-paste the first 0x200 bytes from a Gateway disk image, I can use emuNANDTools to inject a working NAND

I can also do the same thing and it almost works with Experimental Options Choose "Format SD for EmuNAND" Left-Right-Down-Up-A.... but I see this:

After this, the card is no longer recognized by the 3DS or the PC, but it's an easy fix.
Just paste back in the first 0x200 bytes from the Gateway disk image and it's back on-line!

Just wait for a bit, fix coming up! As for EmuNAND recognizing the SD card as EmuNAND enabled - good point! What happens if you change anything other than the 'GATEWAYNAND' label in the text?

I changed only the first byte from G to Z (ZATEWAYNAND)

emuNANDTools and Gateway don't see the emuNAND.
Change it back to a G and all is fine again.

This would be critical for the users because with Gateway, it launches like normal, but puts you in sysNAND with Gateway running....

Update:
I changed it to read
GATEWAYNAND - THIS IS DUMMY SECTOR, SEARCH FOR "NCSD" FOR REAL SECTOR
to
GATEWAYNAND - THIS IS DUMMY SECTOR, SEARCH FOR "NCSD" FUR REAL SECTOR

and both emuNANDTools and Gateway work like normal.
I seem to remember reading that it looks for GATEWAYNAND only.

Alright, don't let this hold you off from sleeping, but it would be interesting to know if you can change the other text (basically everything but 'GATEWAYNAND').

Last one for tonight.

I changed it to: GATEWAYNANDblah-blah-blah-Gateway-fix your 3DS Card Manual Reading!!
and still both emuNANDTools and Gateway work like normal.

OK, one more little thing of note:
On the picture above, where it says SD Card Size: 352MB - 3DS NAND Size: 943MB
That's a 16GB card with a 2GB unallocated emuNAND partition.

Just thought I'd throw that in in case it helps....

Oh, and here's my screen with the added DPAD Left + Start : Shutdown (Hint..Hint...) :)
70% of the time I'm using Decrypt9, the next thing I'm going to do is remove the Internal SD card to copy off what it did for me.

It seems every app has a different key combo to shutdown.
Gateway is DPAD Down+B, Decrypt9 is DPAD Left + Start, Shadowtrance is SELECT.... it's hard for old guys like me to remember unless it's on the screen....

I think that's looking great! But, how does that look inside the EmuNAND options "File Dump..." submenu? I'm pretty sure the text does overlap then.

Anyways, @everyone, I've got somewhat bad news about EmuNAND formatting: We can't do that inside Decrypt9 at the moment, because there is no complete implementation of FATFS available. All current FATFS implementations (that includes the one in Decrypt9) for 3DS miss the ioctl functions, which are required for (among other things) determining the correct size of the SD card and FAT32 formatting a partition. Normatts SDMMC.c (which provides low level SD/NAND access) provide a function for determining SD size, but that function does not work reliably (or not at all, don't know).

So, what does that mean? We can still try doing it on PC. It even makes sense, as writing the NAND image will be so much faster then. Problem here is, I didn't find the right tools or source code for the job yet. If we had the source code of EmuNAND tool by @n1ghty , that would be an almost perfect starting point. Also helpful: simple(!) source code for FAT32 formatting, FDISK partitioning and raw data writing to a drive on Windows or versatile tools to do so.

Alright, after pondering the possibilities some more... What we could do is setup an EmuNAND on 3DS if the SD card is already FAT32 formatted. In that case we'd just move some data around and clear the FAT tables. That would be pretty safe and fast as well. Big downside: the SD has to be formatted before even starting this (on the plus side, factory formatted SD cards normally are most often already FAT32 formatted anyways). Also there would be some room for error if the SD card is formatted in a special way. Any ideas (also, for the post before)?

I can:
  • Format a SD as FAT32 using MiniAide Fat32 Formatter leaving a 1 GB space unallocated before the partition. (2GB if N3DS)
  • Use HxD to paste in the first 0x200 bytes of data from a Gateway SD Image file.
  • Use emuNANDTool to inject a NAND.bin
  • Copy a Launcher.dat file to it.
-done, works fine

Does it also work if you use Decrypt9 to inject the EmuNAND instead of EmuNAND tool? Other than that, currently working on that, expect a more convenient solution soon. EmuNAND Tools source code would be perfect, but I guess there's no chance we 're going to see that.

On another note, what is that thing about the MiniAide website WOT rating? I can'teven access that site, and I suspect my adblocker blocks it.

My adblocker blocks it as well... Anyways, I figured i'd show this, @Shadowtrance this is all completely made with nothing but imagemagick, it isn't finished but I thought I'd just show some of the power behind IM
bg.png

pretty cool eh? now if I could figure out a glow effect I could probably make it look even better :)

It's all made up of 3 commands though I'm looking at making it less than that
