The title is somewhat ambiguous, but bear with me:

Blogs used to be a great part of this site. The way they were integrated into the old forum, they were easily accessible, highly used, and a great way to hold other discussions for everybody, regardless of their interest in the current popular games, hacks, or otherwise. Now, I remember when we transitioned, a lot of people were interested in seeing blogs come back, even more so, in the way they had been previously. Obviously I don't know the limitations of the resources available to you with this particular forum, but the solution we got did seem decent with the blogs tab up top. Unfortunately, it has just turned into the place where posts that don't belong anywhere else go to die. Being set off from the main forum, few visit it, fewer post anything in it, and next to nobody seems to actually read or comment on anything.

Essentially, as it is now, the blogs section is basically a dumping ground for personal posts that people post in general off topic, likely because they know that is where their post will actually be seen, not stashed off in an entirely separate part of the site where it can be buried as soon as enough weeks go by that a few people finally make a few new blog posts.

Onward to my suggestion:

I'm sure this was suggested before, though, I have no idea if it was suggested with this particular forum version as more than a temporary solution, but bear with me. I was thinking we get rid of the blogs tab/section as it is now entirely and change it into a forum off of Other Discussions that doesn't increase post count. This alone would increase visibility of the section, but to encourage participation, I was thinking one of two things:

1) Simply make it so posts in blogs show up in the recent forum posts box on the front page. This would maximize visibility, but may not be ideal when considering other topics, as well as how many different 3DS threads have become priority in the community as the 3DS scene has continued to advance. Another way this could be handled, if possible with this particular forum, is splitting the recent threads box so that one tab displays recent threads, and another recent blogs.

2) Assuming that splitting the box is impossible, my second suggestion would be to make a new block that just holds recent blogs that would automatically be on the front page. This could be smaller, maybe only showing the top five most recent blogs to keep the front page from getting too cluttered, and could be automatically positioned right under the default position for the most recent threads block. Seeing as the front page is mostly customizable, people would of course be free to move it around, but that would certainly make people far more aware that blogs exist.

I don't think that blogs are simply unpopular, but just unseen. This can hopefully be fixed to maybe get more members talking again that aren't all that interested in the happenings of the 3DS scene. Plus, when was the last time we heard one of those delightful stories about Blaze almost dying or kicking someone's ass?

As someone who used to spend a majority of his time in Blogs, i'd love to see them properly return.
It was a great place for this community to actually feel like a community.

plus it was the only section where I was nice to people

EDIT: This is perhaps a bit random but sort of maybe similar. I miss when status updates had their own little box so it showed the latest ones and you could comment on them. Good times were had there.

Just want to get this back into recent posts to see if anybody wants to add their input. I realize a lot of our members have only been around really for the 3DS scene, so they may not know the joy that blogs once brought, but trust me when I say, they were a fantastic way for our community to tell their stories and casually chat.

If the wii section was a fenced of wasteland then blogs were a black hole as far as most of the site staff were concerned.

All that said content is king, squeaky wheels get grease and standing out in a warzone is a good way to get shot. Make it so the blogs have some content worth seeing and things have a habit of happening.

So what, are you saying blogs need to be more active to make change happen despite their current location on the site being the main reason for their lack of activity? Blogs were ridiculously active for blogs from the point I joined all the way up until we lost them for awhile. The blogs section we have now seemed like a decent solution at the time, but time has made it clear that it is not working for making the blogs an active part of the site.

I totally agree with you Nathan, and I already mentioned it when forum update discussion appears.
It's just that it's very long and hard to code a proper plugin for integrating new modules to the forum, and xenforo is an all new environment and everything need to be re-coded from scratch compared to the invision board we had before.
It was decided to give priority to other improvement as a Blog module already existed for xenforo. so we got that module instead of re-writing one.

I still hope we will get the blogs back into the forum section one day :)
(It will depend on developer's priority and more importantly free time!)

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
Karma177 @ Karma177: @The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really...
