I think it's funny that we called the code used to unban 022-2812 "UnbanMii" way before this application was conceived. I love coincidences. I blame the nomenclature of the Nintendo scene. It makes it hard to be creative.

looks like the public seed for method 3 is kill. (sorry if it is linked with the unbanmii situation, no idea how it's been developing)

Anyone know why MarcusD closed UnbanMii? There was no reason for that.
Because it is now known as the 1st malware for the 3ds and it has ruined his reputation and all the other devs that worked on it along with the people who supported it (including myself). It has also ruined the unbanmii name (so if he made an update to it to no longer be malware nobody would trust/use it). It is quite a shame because this was something I have been wanting since november when my old 3ds got banned. Hopefully somebody makes something like it without it being malware.

I mean he deleted his github befroe this ever happen.

Probably because it was being used to harvest friend seeds.
That would be a reason yeah.

How are you sure that only people who used 2.0 got their "shit" leaked?
Because it's only been closed source since 2.0, which is when the malware was added.

What @mariogamer is asking is, why did the devs make it closed source in the first place, if not to cover the fact that it was being turned into malware?
As I said above, it's only been closed source since 2.0, which is when the malware was added

It's a question I'd like to see answered too.

I can only think of one legitimate reason to close a previously open source project, and I'm not giving the devs a "get out of jail free" card.

@Zidapi, if the answer to that question isn't written on the wall then I don't know what is. Honestly, if they hadn't closed the source then it probably wouldn't have become so suspicious. That isn't to say that someone wouldn't have eventually found the malicious code just by traversing the code, but Infection 101 denotes that societal manipulation is key to mass spreading. Closing the source just raises questions. Keep it open and the majority would have never raised a brow.

Also, my reply to him was a sarcastic response to what is practically a rhetorical question.

Well he wanted to make sure no one would upload fake seeds so he closed the source so no body can learn how to work around the validation.

That's retarded. Prevent people from being able to do so with authentication of some kind (and not including credentials in the source), or use a standalone client for the PC to add seeds to the database. Seriously, that should be a non issue and seems like the biggest excuse ever. @astronautlevel was already able to dump their tables, so a lot of good that did.

It's quite ironic that something that could of been so helpful to the community, turned into something dangerous and caused even more drama besides the most recent banwaves. At this point it wouldn't suprise me if someone is undercover working for Nintendo.Didnt someone say themely was created by one of the unbanmii devs? I mean didn't that come out before the ban wave at the end of may. What if other homebrew applications can gather information aswell and we don't know it yet.

Well he wanted to make sure no one would upload fake seeds so he closed the source so no body can learn how to work around the validation.
That's a piss poor excuse when even IF faked seeds would succeed injection, they wouldn't work. They would either fail to inject, or not do anything at all. Not to mention if someone wanted "faked" seeds distributed they wouldn't have had to rely on unbanmii. Any random Joe can upload seeds to warez sites, which at this point I would trust more so than a closed sourced program to download them.

Not to mention that would be completely and utterly pointless. Actions always speak louder than words, you guys can excuse them as naive but it seems premeditated. Even if there was some logical reason to hash check the seeds submitted, there was absolutely no reason to do it to ones that weren't uploaded. Period. Had they said it was a way to verify the seeds uploaded by choice this wouldn't even be an issue. Are you forgetting they were stealing the unique console info, it wasn't given freely. No one would HAVE to work around assumed "validation" because it isn't necessary when you're stealing them to begin with; whole reason for the closed source to hide the fact. Otherwise why do it?

These guys knew exactly what they were doing and when they got caught first denied it by saying the information was deleted immediately when it wasn't, then threw blame around, then admitted to knowing it was wrong but doing it anyway. So I can just make some malware, disseminate it and then cry "woe is me" when the pitchforks come and all is forgiven because "it was a shitty decision?" Some of you guys really amaze me with how forgiving you are.

I'm sure this could have gone very differently if it wasn't discovered as soon as it was. How would you feel if you used this program, just to have an extra seed in case your private one got banned. Yet, the people that were "helping" stole your consoles info without your permission. Then they sell this info to dozens of people and one of them get's your personal device hyperbanned? Would you have cared if you had to buy a brand new console or live with a permanent eShop ban or something?

Most others are open sourced so you can search the code yourself, 9/10 people don't write malicious code and leave it open to the public.

Actually, like I said above, it'd make more sense to keep a malicious application open source in this regard in order to trick more people into installing it. "It's open source therefore it's safe" is a very dangerous assumption, and malicious entities can play on this easily. Eventually someone's going to find the malicious actions of the application, but this is going to happen open source or not. You catch more flies with honey though.

Well in the sense that open sourced is well, open anyone can have a peek through the code so it's just as likely it would be found before widespread dissemination. Two sides of the same coin I guess. People just need to be vigilant when using any freeware.

To be fair, it's very difficult to convey sarcasm though plain text.

There are a *number* OF formatting options available that allow you to place emphasis on certain words, or whole sentences in order to convey sarcasm.

Perhaps you should familiarise yourself with them? ;-) /s :creep:

I'm teasing of course, it's clearly sarcasmon second glance.

I'm with you on this. Until I hear a really credible reason from the devs as to why they suddenly decided to make it closed source, I'm inclined to think this was an intentional deception on their part.

I haven't been following "unbanning" at all, so these devs are nobodies to me, they have zero credibility. @astronautlevel on the other hand does, unfortunately his friendship with the unbanmii dev might mean he's getting played himself. Obviously you don't want to think the worst of your friend.

I must ask...would it be difficult to trace where/who it came from first? It had a beginning for sure...
No need. The devs admitted it immediately when presented with the evidence.

Didnt someone say themely was created by one of the unbanmii devs?
Yes, someone did. But that someone was wrong.

Somewhat worryingly though, @astronautlevel says he'd actually trust the dev of unbanmii over the themely dev... (though he's hardly impartial, he's working on his own theme homebrew:P)
Themely is made by a different user (Themely was made by Erman, who has a bad track record anyway, while this was made by Sono). I'd actually trust Themely more if it was made by Sono rather than Erman

That isn't too worrisome. I'd trust the unbanmii dev over the themely dev as well. The unbanmii dev just had zero concept of understanding how to handle private data properly, but came forward directly when the gig was up and immediately abandoned the project when he got called out on it. Combine that with all developers instantly distancing themselves and getting rid of the data straight away, and I'd personally say this was more of a huge mistake rather than consistent behavior.

The themely dev (and the 3dsthem.es guy since they are the same person) has persistently behaved like an immature shit who wants the world to bend his way. The themely guy however did a 'taking the ball and going home' by abandoning GBATemp when he got called out on his behavior for being a shit on GBATemp. With the themely guy it's more a consistent behavior thing.

Basically, this has turned into a witch hunt against the UnbanMii devs who did this "malware" (Altho nobody could do anything with 3DS data lol) while they just did that by pure incompetence.

Also please read this @Zidapi

Also really, what the hell could the devs have done with the freaking LFCS_B and NAND CID. These are not computers, they are 3DSes.
