Cool, thanks! I'm starting to think that the SD card I bought is causing problems for CIA installs. I'll be sure to post my findings when I've got it all figured out.

All the assistance is really appreciated.

OKAY. Well it's not seeming like my 3DS moddin' is liking me anymore. I want to start right over from the very beginning. How do I start completely fresh? No care for saves. I just want to start at the basics of sysnand 6.2 again and try doing what I did the first time. Thanks!

Download SD Formatter and format your SD card with it. This will wipe everything from your SD, including emuNAND. Format your sysNAND and that will return you to as close to factory settings as you can get.

Thanks! I'm gonna put this stuff down for a day or two and actually play a game or two.

So I got a gateway coming in soon for my 9.2 3ds and have a few questions. Do I have to change headers to play a .3ds format game online? Are there any benefits to using .cia files over .3ds files? If I use mainly .cia files I should invest in a better sd card rather than micro sd for the gateway? and finally is FBI included in gateway or do I have to install that separately?

Is there a guide anywhere on how to downgrade a new 3DS from 9.0.0 to 4.x? Do I need a Gateway card, or can I just use their launcher (or maybe Ninjhax)? Looking to get ReiNAND set up with MSET...

Okay I've decided I'm going to buy a 3ds XL, and I've been doing some reading so hopefully all I need is someone to confirm I got this right:

If I wanted to run 3ds roms on my handheld then...

New 3DS @ 9.2 sysNAND = Pasta CFW (Cubic Ninja required)

Old 3DS @ 9.2 sysNAND = RxTools through browser exploit (NOTHING else required)

If I find an old 3DS for sale at a local store, and the firmware is 9.2, am I safe to buy it knowing I can just install RxTools without having to make any additional purchases? Is the browser exploit present in every Old 3DS up to 9.2?

Thanks in advance, you guys are very helpful.

Anyone? I'm on the fence about getting a New 3DS vs Old 3DS because I'm not 100% sure Old 3DS requires cubic ninja or gateway in 9.2 to install rxtools and custom firmware.

To play a .3DS game online, rename the extension to .3DZ and use the Gateway Rom Patcher to inject a private header. If it asks you to adjust the size press yes.

For benefits of .cias, you do not need to inject a header and you don't need the Gateway cart inserted to load the games. Personally I prefer roms, but that's just me.

If you're going to going the .cia route, definitely invest in a bigger SD for your 3DS, not the Gateway cart.

Edit: My bad, didn't see the "new" here's the guide to downgrade your system settings from the Gateway website (note: steps must be performed in sysNAND):
1) Copy the Gateway 3DS ULTRA Launcher.dat to your New 3DS microSD card
2) Copy mset_<region>.cia to your New 3DS microSD card (where <region> is your console region)
3) Copy “DevMenu.3ds” to your Gateway 3DS microSD card (You can use any .cia installer to accomplish this instead).
4) Boot into the Gateway menu with your preferred entrypoint (Zelda or Cubic Ninja)
5) Select the new “NVRAM INSTALL” option from the menu, proceed with installation.
6) Once installed, boot into Gateway mode (or CFW in sysNAND)
7) Start your .cia installer and import mset_<region>.cia from your SD card.
8) Reboot console and verify you can now boot into Gateway mode (or CFW) with the classic System Settings DS Profile method. (Settings -> Profile -> Nintendo DS profile)

As long as a 9.2 or lower O3DS has the browser, it is good to go without making any additional purchases (albeit maybe a bigger SD card).

You just need the Gateway launcher to do this. Make a backup of your NAND and leave it on the SD card. Download the correct downgrade file for your region from the Gateway website and then use the option on the launcher to perform the downgrade.

Just to clarify, this method definitely works for the new 3ds at 9.0? Sorry just want to double check before I take the plunge!

Ah I thought he was talking about the mset for Reinand. Sorry misread it! Cheers.

Haha I guess it's still early.

Is it possible to do all this with just the Sky3DS and Cubic Ninja rom? From what I've read you don't need a Gateway for the launcher, but I thought you still needed the blue card or a normal DS flash card to install the mset exploit? It would be great if this is no longer the case!

It is definitely possible to set up the 4.X system settings without a DS flashcart (and possible to launch GW without it). Boot either Pasta or ReiNAND in sysNAND and use one of the .cia installers to install the necessary .cia.

As for installing the ReiNAND MSET exploit without a DS flashcart, I'm not sure. If he provides a method to set up the NVRAM install without a DS flashcart, it's definitely possible. If not, a DS flashcart will still be required.

Ah, may have to get hold of an R4i in that case. Thanks again for your help!

I'm in the same boat. Luckily I ordered an R4 last week (purely for DS backups - total coincidence that ReiNAND now has MSET). Tried to deliver today, but, well, the postman never bothers to ring the doorbell so guess I'll me picking it up tomorrow morning.

@BobDoleOwndU
Just to make sure I'm doing this right, it doesn't require a Gateway card, just the launcher? If I've read this correctly, I can do the following;

Boot GW Launcher (via Cubic Ninja)
Install NVRAM
Boot to CFW (Pasta, in sysNAND)
Use BBM to install the MSET cia

Also, MSETs...where can I obtain these? Available on the site referred to as "that ISO site"?
Nevermind - didn't realise GW provided them

Yep, only the launcher is required.

Those steps look good to me!

Ok, so I've installed the NVRAM via GW launcher, rebooted and I'm trying to get Ninjhax running again (it's being a little finicky). I'll be using FBI (via Homebrew launcher) to install the MSET, do I need to install it to SD or NAND?

I haven't actually used FBI to install the MSET .cia before. I believe NAND should be the correct option, but I could be wrong.
