It launched today. Bought one. Before opening (might just purely collect), what's the firmware out of the box and how's the grip on these compared to 3ds or 2ds xl let's say?

Nice! Anyone know the firmware out of box? I'm assuming this wasn't produced way ahead of time so should have newest?

If you read the comments from the provided link, you'd know that it's 11.5.

Oh ops, for some reason my brain thought that was a quote of my previous comment .
I've always just collected DS silently on my own, but I think I might hack it this time, I'm not too updated on the scene but does homebrew (or whatever other alternatives) be able to hack this firmware? I bought two of these today so I'm down to crack open one.

Thanks guys! New to the thread, great to see there's still nintendo enthusiasts out there. Nobody gives a crap about DS in my area :(

You will need to buy a DS flashcart (unless you have a compatible one already).
This guide will fill you in on the details.

Or is there anyway I can do it without flash cart and just memory cards?

Any flashcart that is updatable bootrom can be used. Its just a matter if the ntrflasher supports it.

And i doubt your old r4 has updatable bootrom

I will recommend you buy a new R4 card, it's not expensive right? A good option is R4i gold 3ds+ or you can choose Ace3ds plus too.

Hey, OP, am Canadian and I have a bunch of R4i 3DS RTS that work with the ntrboothax. I can get them to you faster/cheaper.

Couldn't I just update it to 11.6 and use the dsi ware system transfer?

If ya got a second hacked system with one the games listed then yes, you can easily do a dsiware transfer for it.
