One more bit of information:
If you've forwarded the ports and are still getting the "Cannot Host" message, try temporarily disabling any firewall you have up. I always have to disable my ESET Smart Security firewall if I want to host in 2DF. Just remember to re-enable it once you're done with 2DF!
EDIT: Just thought I'd point out that 2DFighter connects you to your opponent DIRECTLY with the use of a P2P CONNECTION as opposed to Kalliera's one hosted server for all in the room. This eliminates much (nearly all) of the lag experienced on both ends and results in smoother matches.
