Nintendo announces the New 2DS XL

Coming out of absolutely nowhere, Nintendo has revealed a new variation of the 2DS...the New 2DS XL! The system features a top screen that looks almost like a cell phone snapped onto the bottom of a 3DS. It has the extra processing power of the N3DS, amiibo functionality, and the C-stick nub, while, just like the original 2DS, omits the 3D feature of the handheld. The New 2DS XL will release on July 28, and retail for $149.99.

You're on GBATemp and you don't have a 3ds?¿?

I dont have a 3DS either lol. I only want one device for portable gaming and right now it's my phone. Hell I'm still enjoying my DS collection via Drastic. Back on topic, I really hope the 3DS will stay a while longer. we really don't need another DS till 2020. I think there's a lot that could still be done.

Nintendo has shown time and time again that they do not have the manpower to simultaneously support two platforms at the same time. You can disagree all you want, but there's a bunch of Wii U's covered in dust to prove otherwise. The Switch currently has two noteworthy first-party exclusives and both of them are Wii U up-ports, the library situation is dire and if Nintendo should focus on something, it'd be the Switch, not the 3DS which hasn't seen a truly noteworthy blockbuster since Pokemon Sun/Moon. It's time to pull the lever on the 3DS, they already have the hybrid everybody wanted, so there's no reason for them to have two incompatible portable consoles on the market at the same time. The 3DS crowd needs to switch, pun intended, if their new console is supposed to succeed, and for that the Switch needs content.

Looks nice. Seem to have finally gotten rid of the raised border around the bottom screen as well. Looks like the lower screen is slightly recessed, rather than having the raised border, should have done it years ago.

I'm not sold on the switch..I don't like tablet size devices on the go. I'll stick with my 3DS and see what the future brings. If they stop making the 3DS and go Switch as the only option for Nintendo gaming, then I hope the raspberry pi crowd starts building cool portables for the mainstream.

Nintendo doesn't care what you think nor relies on your "theories" of proper business ideas

Many people think the same and a Mini Switch will be an inevitable consequence. I suspect that a more portable version of the system is already in the works, as it's the case with most systems.

Of course they don't. If they did rely on common sense, they wouldn't release three home consoles that bombed worldwide, with the Wii being a notable exception due to its gimmicky nature. You might think that a library smaller than the average amount of digits on a human hand is acceptable, but mainstream gamers most certainly do not. I wish the Switch well, but the whole point of its design is to bridge the gap between the home console and the portable, which is exactly why Nintendo should promptly axe the alternatives.

S̶o̶n̶y̶F̶a̶n̶B̶o̶y̶4̶ I mean @Foxi4 has a point though. Not that the 3DS should die. But the Switch needs content. I have absolutely 0 motivation to buy a switch right now due to it's lack of content.

In a way its free money for Nintendo. Its a gimmick to sell more 3DS/2DS hardware they prob already have stock of. They also have a huge 3DS library they are happy to keep selling.

they may as well make a new handheld at this point.

Can I interest you in a New Nintendo Switch&cheeseburger? Honestly, if they did make an all-in-one N3DS XL R, Nintendo knows the market would devour it; no doubts from Reggie if it could sell well, like the case with NES Classic. And even then, they'd still make revisions and LE models.

As for a new dedicated handheld, who knows? Switch feels like it could just be the 'new' unified thing since Wii U is fading and 3DS feels like it's going to do an O.G. Game Boy on us--stick around for a decade. In a way, dedicated handhelds will probably be dead when 3DS goes.
